Indian restaurants Zürich

Just had another bad Indian meal at some restaurant in town. Dreaming of the UK where you can have an amazing Indian meal even in the smallest towns and villages.

Some restaurants in Zürich who got five stars ratings are so bloody awful. Need to find a good place soon. How can it be that this so called international city only has shitty restaurants??!

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

Which ones have you been to so far?
The last one I dined at said that next time we visit, tell them I'm English and want 'English hot', and the chef will spice things up.

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

There are many threads discussing Indian restaurants, maybe add to one of them? Either that or at least give us some meaningful information like which restaurants you have tried and why they were bad.

Exactly. OP, that is such a poor review without giving examples, there are some excellent Indian and Sri Lankan restaurants here but you will find them different to those in the UK. My many Asian friends here tell me the food is closer to what you find in India and Sri Lanka, UK Indian food is very different (usually thicker sauces and much sweeter)

Yeah, UK Indian curries are so heavy that you almost cannot go to one and not feel completely bloated afterwards.

There are some nice little places in Zürich like Kobal that cook simple, healthy Indian or Sri Lankan food with sensible portions that are much closer to what you would find in the native countries.

British Indian restaurants (or Bangladeshi, as they actually tend to be) offer a particular style of cooking that we think of as the real thing, though it isn't actually that authentic at all. Whether we Brits have tuned into that style, or whether the style has evolved to match our needs, it's hard to say.

But anyway, I'd first of all say: be a bit more measured in your criticism. Most of us like living here, and get a bit defensive when people are rude about Zurich and its "shitty" restaurants. Be critical, but reasonable.

I moved out of the city a while ago, but we occasionally have team reunions / celebrations at Chalet India, over the road from Horgen Oberdorf station (NB not the main Horgen station by the lake). This is as close as I've come to finding a British-style Indian curry. Should be no surprise as the owner had a restaurant in London for many years (or so I was told). The food is really good, and the restaurant has a great ambience. On summer evenings, the view down the hill to the lake is stunning. It's not cheap of course which will probably be your next complaint, but hey-ho, this is Switzerland. I'm sure there are other places just as good, but this is the best I've found.

Incidentally, I've had plenty of sub-standard curries in the UK too. May be less of a lottery than here, but it's still easy to be disappointed.

You can wear one of those polyester stuffed, polyester lined, polyester outer coats - but you'll look like a commoner.

Frankly I am not paid what I am worth, but you are more then welcome to assume what you like, not that it is any of your business.

And 35.- for a single dish in any Indian restaurant is nuts, its not fine dinning unless its got a Michelin Star, OK Banares in London for example, but Taste of Kerala in Zürich nooooooooooope.

Overpriced and not very good, so I cook my own and yes its as good.

Overpriced or in line with the costs of providing a restaurant service in Switzerland? I don't think there are many Indian restaurant owners or workers in Switzerland driving round in super cars and living in lakeside villas.

Oh and the worst Indian I've had in Switzerland was in a Michelin starred one at the MO in Geneva. 35 barely gets you a starter there.

Re: Indian restaurants Zürich

You should try the upmarket ones in London, Chutney Mary's, Bombay Brasserie, you'll pay about GBP 150.-- for two without going silly on the liquid side, say 70/30% solid/liquid ratio

I pay 25.00 for curry, rice and daal in my local (excellent) Indian and 18 in my (even better) Sri Lankan cafe. My Sri Lankan friends tell me that it's almost as good as mama makes.

3 course meal for one without liquid could run you close to GBP 150 for one!
