Divonne Market -Attempted Ripoff

Went to the Divonne-les-Bains Sunday market yesterday. At one stall, we attempted to buy some cooked vegetables : aubergines & peppers, probably not more than 200 grams or so. The stall holder spooned them into a plastic bag, then asked us for €45. Then on request, repeated the price. Of course, we walked away without purchasing. Still can't figure out his motivation. Totally bored with his existence?

Okay, explain to me why a seller in Switerland would be asking you to pay in Euros?

So it is. Didn't get a close enough look at the map. From a distance it looks like it's in Switzerland.

Heard your foreign accent & thought you'd be stupid enough to pay it? Or was a stupid foreigner himself saying 4 euros 50 & got it wrong.

Re: Divonne Market -Attempted Ripoff

The Divonne market is notorious for being aimed at Swiss coming over the border. Prices are way above what you would pay elsewhere in France.

Re: Divonne Market -Attempted Ripoff

It's not too bad if you ignore the crappy clothing and phone cover stalls ..

For me it's a 10 minute drive, wine and oysters on a sunday morning.. Lovely.

I'm voting that the stall owner said 4.50 too

quarante-cinq
quatre-cinquante

Re: Divonne Market -Attempted Ripoff

You sure he didn't say 4.50?

They probably do increase their prices a bit as it's so close to CH and people pay no questions asked. But even the stupidest of buyers couldn't fall for this exorbitant price. And neither could the stupidest of sellers think anyone would indeed pay 45.- for an eggplant and some peppers

Re: Divonne Market -Attempted Ripoff

quarante cinq centimes (you mean?) - no-one would say quarante cinq cents in France or in Romandie...

Mind you, I had a similar experience in Pontarlier market last summer. A guy from selling a range of olive paste with other veg, one with aubergine- and it was massively expensive. I had 200 gr of 2 types and that was over 30 Euros I was too stupid to walk away ...nice stuff though.

All that antipasto/tapenade stuff is frightfully expensive - even away from the Geneva/ex-pat/diplomat catchment area. However, you don't eat much at a time.

I've lived in different francophone countries for more than 45 years, when the stall holder said €45 my wife and I asked him to repeat the figure (in shock horror), he repeated it.

I am always a bit wary of markets, a shop has quality control, ethics (it is part of their image) etc..

Re: Divonne Market -Attempted Ripoff

The Divonne market is known to be the most expensive one in the whole of France. I guess this merchant thought he'd bring it to the next level with his special 'Swiss expat' tapenade mix priced at 20 eur per 100 gr.? Maybe Migros should hire him:-)
