I think it takes a special person for me to speak Swiss German to me to actually start liking it. Sorry guys..the language sounds so...unphysiological. Weird. French is pretty and tender.

(My only pet peeve is loud eating...slurping, etc.) | | | | | Most of the slurping was from Westerners who hadn't figured out how to use chopsticks. I was more than happy with a steady diet of Sushi and Tempura in Japan. Korea was sometimes a bit spicier than I preferred.
At 18, Japan was an eye opener to me. It was a bit like visiting another planet.

| | Re: I am so sick and tired of languages, can we agree on one PLEASE | Quote: | | | | | ...I flew back to America, and everyone on the plane was talking to each other, never thinking for a second that everyone around them wouldn't understand every word, every nuance. On my short European flights, everything is generally as silent as a tomb, and I get the strong impression from all of the gesturing that airline passengers make it's because no one knows what language everyone else speaks, and they're afraid of not being understood. I know I sure as hell am. This difference in being able to connect and/or communicate is absolutely horribly emotionally traumatizing. | | | | | I think the explanation here is simpler. I think the chances are extremely high that you flew to the states on a Boeing. Americans have an absolute, almost religeous, trust in their home grown technology. Nothing can possibly can go wrong, hence the relaxed chatty atmosphere.
Stick the same bunch of american passengers on an Airbus and you'll see ashen faces, white knuckles, and you'll experience the silence of absolute fear.
Here in Europe we don't trust technology, so the silence you experience on a short haul european flight is not the culture, nor the politeness of Europeans, but the absolute terror that at any given time on the flight you're only a maximum of four minutes away from a fiery death.

However, not sure if anyone forced the OP to come to a part of the world where they speak German, and surely s/he would have done a tiny teensy bit of research before coming about the situation here. There is a good reason I refused a job in Hull in 1970 fish and Geordie (still hate fish, but now love Geordie )

| | Re: I am so sick and tired of languages, can we agree on one PLEASE | Quote: | | | | | Rearranging words in my head until a sentence makes absolutely no sense is absolutely exhausting. To top that off, you then have to know these god-awful articles for every. blasted. word. in the universe. If you don't, then you can't function. | | | | | That's why everyone here speaks Swiss-German.
No need to rearrange words (basically English word order), and for every article you use d'.

Tom | | | | | D'accord.
On another note - I think people compare incomparable. Coming here for work and with dependants is not coming here because somebody fell for a Swiss German. If you fall for somebody, they sound like heaven to you, n'est pas. You forgive them.
OP is positive...hence the lengthy tirade. Negative people bark. He did not. I give him a few months only, before his local language skills improve. Go go go, OP. Der, die, das, psí ocas.
