Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

Okay first off I understand that it is what you do, not where you are.

But I guess coming from California, Im just like scratching my head thinking, where is the culture? Do I need a lot of money to have fun? I have been here for about nine months now and don't get me wrong, I've had plenty of fun. The monotony of pastoral beauty malaise has set and I get these recommendations for pottery classes, dance, yoga etc. but They are all so expensive !!! I am a trailing spouse (my god , I shiver ) and have only been able to land small jobs here and there because of language (Mon dieu!!). We are on a really, really tight budget.

But does anyone else feel like...another techno club where the apparent social classes are determined by if you dance or not. Or another walk by the lake is going to end in a shooting of those geese. Sorry for the image, I just think they're mean and horrible.

Where's the heartbeat here?

Tips, suggestions, comments , complaints?

Well, Switzerland tends to be wild and exciting for the introvert. I hate to tell you this but Lausanne is one of the more exciting cities in Switzerland...so yeah, enjoy the geese.

Welcome to the forum.

Here you go. Two birds, one stone:

Lausanne Meetups

Learn some french, participate in an event, build some friendships.
That makes any city feel a bit less dull.

Re: Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

There's no fun below 120K CHF/year.

PS: You landed job(s) at least, congratulations that's the first start and quite an achievement for a trailing foreigner! (as opposed to those who came with a job offer, like me).

Re: Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

Noooo, not at all. My life has been on a budget and the opposite of boring, even the odd 12 years in CH. While I agree with LS being one of the hopping (ehm...yeah) places in CH, you can skip the geese if you manage to truck yourself to all the dozens of hip EPFL/Unil activities. Those are ALWAYS on a budget and mostly a lot of fun!

Nothing ever beats Cali in fun-o-meter, btw. Forget it and you will live rosier here

We are going running for the race on April 22, btw. Google it if you feel like doing something fun and physical.

I do not know what you consider "Budget", but nearly CHF 800 to ride on a SBB train is on the pricier side.

PS: It is in the driver's compartment

Re: Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

If you are on a budget (but also when you are rich and bored or just interested in some activity) have a look what activities the community centres (Centres socio-culturels) have to offers:

http://www.fasl.ch/

Also a great way to interact with others and learn the local language.

Re: Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

LMFAO! Your comments are really funny! My wife is originally from Lausanne, I'm from southern California, we currently live in San Diego area, and we are permanently moving our family to Lausanne next year. It's true that Switzerland can be a paradise for introverts. I'm really into hiking, outdoorsy stuff, so Switzerland is a great fit for me.

Although we're taking advantage as much as possible now enjoying the beaches and warm, pleasant southern California weather. We know "real winter" is coming.

But Lausanne has a lot to offer. I'd say it's more interesting than Geneva, personally. We were in Lausanne 2 years ago for about a month, and we went out quite a bit, Lausanne has great summer festivals, outdoor concerts, etc. We saw one of our favorite musicians in Montreux. The lake is great. There's sailing too. Sure, if you're on a budget, you have to choose your activities wisely.

But I know there's many other less expensive ways to enjoy your time there. I'd recommend checking out local Meetup groups or activities with the university.

I agree what others have said about Cali. Cali is elite when it comes to "instant fun" out your backdoor. There's international music festivals like Coachella, beaches, L.A., San Francisco, etc. But don't compare CH to Cali. Forget about Cali, and you'll soon enough find ways to discover your own fun in Lausanne.

Bonne chance!

Re: Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

I saved cash by renting...you can rent a board for the lake, skis and boots in the winter, sign up for board games without having to buy them, etc. The fees for races aren't so much either, the next run was under 20 bucks. Things only seem expensive before you get the know-how and network. I inherited quite a gear for freeride skiing, other stuff bought second hand, flee markets or boldering gear I got half price abroad...Expats leave good things for peanuts, often. Stay away from organized and fee paying activities and services exclusively for expats, total ripoffs.

Re: Is Lausanne Boring on a Budget?

I want to thank you all for the suggestions! It is nice to feel like I'm not the only one shooting geese now (I am not) (*yet)

I am just wondering if anyone has had the experience with a Swiss partner living again in their "hometown". No Lausanne is not San Francisco by any means, but the culture is so different. I've been told American relationships are shallow (uh huh, from experience?) but it seems like meeting Lausanne born and raised people are so comfortable within their own social circle it is like pulling teeth to get close, alongside coming up with conversation material in French (then English) to make a friendship. It really feels like dating!!! I know it's a bit off topic but when you have good friends it doesn't matter the budget, I'll see you at le jetée de la compagnie.

Anyways, the suggestions are wonderful and I really appreciate it. (As a shallow Californian)

Come to Evian! Take the boat, especially if you have acquired a Mi-Taxe-Abo and have a lovely time over here. We have an exhibition of Raoul Dufy's paintings at the moment. The casino if you feel like a flutter. Free water from the Evian Source Cachat if you bring empty bottles. Free ride up the 1907 Funicular and back. Stroll along the lakeside in both directions. And, and, and. Feel free to PM me and I will come to meet you and show you around. Oh and BTW, lunch at the local restaurant €11.-- or €14.-- for three courses. Wow!
