Need advise about movies!!!

Hi all!
I am Swiss but have been living abroad for over 20 years now, been back since July last year. Before that I lived in California, and now to my question! I'm a huge movie buff and really enjoy the cinema so have been really struggling here cause most movies are shown in German and those few times I find an English one there are annoying subtitles plastered all over the screen! My question is are there cinemas that show movies in English WITHOUT subtitles in the Zurich region? Thanks for any help!

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

Subtitles are hardly 'plastered all over the screen'. They are written neatly at the bottom. Which is why, if I don't understand first time what someone says to me, I look at their feet to check it.

Most movies are shown in German? In Zurich?! When did that happen?

Unless of course you watch German movies. As in my days they were shown in their original language.

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

Movies are always available in English here, don't remember anything that was German only. I long ago learnt to accept the subtitles, as it's that or no English at all.

I only find the subtitles a little irritating in 3D movies as they seem to stand out more. Also, as I love sci-fi stuff, sometimes when aliens are talking there is no English subtitles. Used to be a real problem when my German was bad. In my first few years in Switzerland I did consider that it might be easier to learn Klingon than German

There seems to have been a change in recent years, at least in my neck o' the woods.

When I first moved here 19 years ago films were shown in their original language, whatever that was, with F/D subtitles. In pretty much all theaters. In English if that is the original language, but no English subtitles if not.

However, nowadays in out our off the beaten path way, films are more and more dubbed into German, no subtitles.

I hate hate hate hate dubbing. Even if I don't understand the original language I so much prefer to see/hear the film 'intact', as the cadence of the language is part of the artistic whole. Dubbing, no matter into which language, just feels 'off'.

The few art house type theaters out this way still show in original language with F/D subtitles, but the block buster type theaters are almost always dubbed into German.

In the cities, I would guess dubbing is still uncommon. Or at least I hope so. Subtitles are great, dubbing... just no.

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

Here is someone who has never been in a Finnish cinema, where half the screen is sometimes filled with the Finnish AND Swedish subtitles...

Up till now, at least in Zürich, movies in the original language - be it English or anything else - can be hard to find, and are usually reduced to big blockbusters. But they always come with German subtitles (which are rather small and really easy to turn off, to be honest). I've never found a cinema without subtitles.

(I for once am happy about them, specially when they take the time to subtitle languages I don't actually understand (say Russian) making it easier to follow the movie having the German right there for the grabs).

You can also wait till the DVD is available, or stream, if it really bothers you that much.

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

It's advice.

Wait for the DVD or go to the cinema in a country where English is one of the official languages.

I would have said the opposite, but maybe it's a german thing, in italian dubbing is an older tradition and only in the last years you have more and more movies in original language with subs.

Totally agree with that...is just...hilarious. I sometimes amuse my OH "dubbing" in German American movies that we watch on Netflix....he has to stop me.

Btw, in some countries dubbing is done by one actor only... it must be totally insane.

(it's actually called revoicing)

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

I understand and agree with having the subtitles----I actually have subtitles for many of the movies we watch at home (SO is not native English speakers).
But watching a comedy movie in the Cinema: A joke would come along, but the majority subtitle users would read the joke and all start laughing, making it too loud to hear the actual joke when it is said on screen. A fraction of a second, but enough to stop me from going to the cinema at all (for the prices in Switzerland).

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

I just checked kitag.com, 14 out of 20 films in Zurich today are available in English. In fact 5 of them are only available in English (no German dub).

Re: Need advise about movies!!!

I loved all those old dubbed over Chinese Kung Fu movies as a kid, they were great, it was really part of the film experience.

However I dont understand the need to dub over some of the films shown, it totally detracts from the actors hard work in a film, especially in German, which I personally find the least expressive tonal language in the world. It basically makes every male and female character unidentifiable, if you close your eyes you would be hard pressed to guess who was saying what.

You can view all English language films in English, but there will always be subtitles. My frustration is that I don't get to watch any World Cinema these days (in the cinema) as the subtitles are usually only in German and French.

I like the subtitles. It means I can think of going to the Kino as a German lesson.
