Best living on the countryside or in the city?

Hi,

I live on the countryside of ZH, somehow cheaper for flats, but on the other hand the rail ticket to the citycenter is costing quite a lot. On the other hand there are 2 S-Bahn connecting to ZH HB, so every 15 I have a train. No parking problems therefore.
But how about living in the center? Anyone of you have rent a flat let's say in the old part "Niederdorf"? How quiet is it at night? Is it safe? Sure the prices are higher, is it worth spending much compared to what you get? Please let me know. Thank you in advance!

Loads of places nearer to Zurich with excellent connections. AaA is way out comparatively.

I lived in Seefeld for 2,5 years. Lovely being able to cross the street and going to the lake. Nightmare if you have a car.

I lived in Seefeld for a year (sub-let) I really liked it. Quite, but still in the city. Rents are high, also very difficult to find. I could walk to work which helped the finances.

So to answer your question, yes to city life, but no to "Niederdorf".
Good luck finding somewhere, and forget about having a car.

We live in Unterstrass (Kreis 6 for poor people). Perfect for both of us - public transport connections for me and for him with the parking space (literally) in front of the door.

There are too many foreigners in Seefeld. Pfui Teufel!

Re: Best living on the countryside or in the city?

Dozens of communes within 10-15mins from Zurich, you won't even notice you've left the city and it may take you less time to get in and out of the city than to get from one point to another within it.

Affoltern is not the best choice for proximity and connections.

If I were to move to Zurich again, it certainly wouldn't be the Niederdorf area. Rents are ridiculous and I don't see the point of living there, really. I'd try to find something in Seefeld, Enge, Wiedikon or Unterstrass, though granted it's Zurich and one may have very little choice because demand > supply.
