Bad experience with Interdiscount "waterproof" bag

At Oberer Letten, I noticed that many people use one of these red Interdiscount bags to carry their stuff while swimming so I bought one for myself.

The first time few times I used it I didn't spend too much time in the Limmat and it worked fine.

Yesterday I went for the Limmatschwimmen (an amazing event, I really recommend it!) which lasted for about an hour. I used the bag again, making sure I roll it enough at the ends and carefully close it. However, when I got out of the water, I could barely carry the bag, because it was full of water! All my stuff, including my wallet and phone, were soaking wet! Therefore, I would not recommend buying this bag!

I am wondering what your experiences with this and/or other waterproof bags are?

Also, do you think it makes sense to complain to Interdiscount that my phone isn't working anymore because of the bag, and ask for a compensation? I know I shouldn't have brought my phone in the first place, but if someone sells something as a "waterproof bag", I really expect it to be waterproof.

P.S. This is my first post on this forum. I apologize if I chose the wrong sub-forum. I would also like to thank you for making my move to Switzerland so much easier, this forum was so helpful! I appreciate it a lot!

Thanks for the quick reply, I wasn't aware of this classification. I think they should have made it clearer while selling it.

Wasserfestigkeit nach IPX 4

Not suitable for swimming. For swimming you need at least IPX 7 to be safe.

Re: Bad experience with Interdiscount "waterproof" bag

Redundancy is key. Even with a welded-seam roll top dry bag, it's best to place your important items in zip-lock baggies inside.

Waterproof means that the bag will keep al of it's characteristics when having been wet, watertight means water cannot penetrate (where the IPX7 would state 30 minutes under water up to a depth of 1 meter, and IPX 8 would mean better protection according to stats provided by the manufacturer.) IPX 4 means will not be penetrated by some splashing water or rain.

Nothing wrong with the info, but you can try it, maybe the sales-guy is not aware of this and is in a good mood.

The specs are clearly stated, I don't see how the OP can accept compensation.

It does also say it's impermeable, i.e. nothing can get in - including water. Google translate comes up with "waterproof bag" so then specifying it's only if it get splashed a bit sounds like a get out on the part of the manufacturer/seller.

Switch watches.....
Water resistant = Splash proof when washing your hands.
Water proof 100m = fine for swimming & diving assuming it has not been opened / battery replaced.

To avoid any confusion possible about terms used it clearly states the IP rate.

Switzerland puts a lot of emphasis on taking personnel responsibility, you should know what you are buying and if you are unsure you ask.

Which does not match with the waterproof claim which is also clearly stated. Plus it assumes everyone will know what IPX even is. I certainly don't.

I know it wouldn't happen here, but in the UK the seller would be pulled up short by the Advertising Standards Authority over this contradiction: waterproof, but splashes only.

Re: Bad experience with Interdiscount "waterproof" bag

the product description on the Interdiscount website clearly states "Wasserdichte Umhängetasche". the definition of wasserdicht is pretty clear and i don't think Interdiscount could get away with IPX codes as a non-expert buyer cannot not be expected to check this standard while buying a 9.95 CHF product.

if Interdiscount would have called it wasserabweisend or something with spritzwasser , it would have been a different story.

Well it depends how you define waterproof really. A raincoat can be described as waterproof and it will repell rainwater but it wouldn't really cut it if you were to go swimming in it.

For the bag to be truly effective during an hour long swim it would need to be watertight. It would almost certainly be fine if you used it while walking in the rain.

the translation of watertight into German gives wasserdicht. this is exactly what is stated in the product description. i would assume that a german wasserdicht has more weight than english waterproof, in this country.

Fair enough. I read the French version of their site which says 'imperméable' and that means waterproof not watertight.

I guess they need to sort their translations out to make it clearer to a layman who doesn't know about IPX codes.

Waterproof does NOT mean that it's water-TIGHT.

Your English knowledge is appalling.

Don't know the norms? Your problem, not the seller's.
