Forum rule issue: no free offers without other discussion contributions

I used to use this forum from time to time, posting offers for free items in the 'Free stuff' section of the Market Place. A while back I was contacted by one of the moderators with the instruction to actively contribute to forum discussions, without which any posts of free offers would no longer be allowed.

Consequently, I now put any free giveaways on the kerb. These are almost always quickly snapped up, but I find it a shame that forum users are now missing out - in the past those who took items from me were very thankful.

Should the aforementioned forum rule be relaxed to allow Free stuff posts? What do you think?

Re: Forum rule issue: no free offers without other discussion contributions

Surely the main thing is you get the stuff shifted and out of your way, free of charge?
At our old place we regularly put stuff outside and it always disappeared quite quickly. Our neighbours did the same. Quickest and easiest way to dispose of unwanted items that are still in a reasonable condition.

Depends on the region, where we are - leaving unwanted things outside is fined as littering. Official pick up dates are on designated days only and there is a detailed list by the municipality - of stuff that cannot be left outside.

If OP wants to give 1st chance to EFers that's kind of them. Contribution other than selling/giving away is requested to keep the kind community spirit going, not just feed the Market Place traffic. It is not so hard, though. Jokes are good, indeed.

Re: Forum rule issue: no free offers without other discussion contributions

It depends where outside. We didn't put stuff on the public highway or even on the pavement, but on area that belongs to the building. That can't be fined. It generally occurred in the days leading up to the oversize rubbish collection. Only then did it get moved out onto the pavement, ready for collection. So no fines possible at all in these cases.

Also it is more ecological for someone local to have the stuff, as there is little or no transport involved that way.
But yes of course, it is very kind of jmhattingh and everyone else who offers free stuff to forum members to do so.

I have seen house rules that forbid doing exactly that (as also landlords could consider this littering)

That may be. But this not dumping rubbish or littering like what you are referring to. This is recycling and things being exchanged between members of a community. Nothing to do with landlords, most of which are rarely ever seen.

of course it mainly depends on the items put on the street. it could be something valuable but also an old sofa or mattress.

You have complied to the rules if you are technically able to post in that section.
Sending such a private message as a moderator is ridiculous.

Where we were the stuff for exchange was not put on the street until collection day, it was on private property.

Right, offering free physical help is not enough, must join in the endless trolling and mobbing of the frequent posters.

Exactly this.. We get an an annual letter, jointly from the PPE, commune, regies..

Leaving stuff out for this purpose is specifically mentioned as not allowed. On the street or within our boundaries visible to the public.

Along with a big list of other stuff from excessively watering plants to installing permanent swimming pools.

Yes. I can see why they would want to restrict plain sellers for money. However, free stuff I don't see the issue with. Should only benefit the forum unless of course people spam post with rubbish that no one wants even if it is free.

It's exactly dumping and/or littering as it's put there in the hope, not certainty, that someone else would want it and take it away.

Fortunately it's not like this everywhere. Having too many rules is never good and extinguishes what little community spirit there's left.

Not at all. It has to be moved down out of the block in any case ready for collection day. There is absolutely no harm in it coming down a day or two beforehand, especially if the stuff can be used. You are missing the point. Some people are glad of second hand items. Many people in Switzerland are high earners and renew furnishings more often than you think and the stuff they chuck out is in very good condition. Some people also take it for use in their garden, garage, cellar or hobby room...
