If there are only minimal clothes in the laundry cupboard they´d suspect one of the partners only stays there infrequently. What give-away the fridge is is beyond me.... I have no beer in the fridge as hubby doesn´t drink beer.

Bathrooms are also on the checklist

A bank account check needs a different type of approval to do that or taxes. Easier to check the place where you live.
I suppose I would find the bank check to be far less obtrusive. I would be really angry is someone was looking at my wardrobe and my underwear.

Checking the house? Easy to see if 2 people actually live together

No, checking the bank account. Two people using the same account doesn't mean they share the same household.

Similar is done for those applying for facilitated naturalization via Suisse spouse. Count yourself lucky that they came at a respectable hour, our surprise visit was before 7am...on a Sunday

i guess it seems odd to show up at someone's house when a bank check could easily show that many married couples have a joint account, a joint lease/ownership, joint credit cards, etc... with frequent shopping trips at the same location.

Even temporary apartments or hotels get people reported to the kreisburo/gemeinde so i'm not sure how they could stay off-grid for *five* years.

I don’t have a joint bank account, no joint credit cards etc. Do you want to say that shows I am not married?

Nor do we.

But, hey, we're both Swiss!

Never have had that happen.

On the other hand, we had children, which is probably a deal clincher.

wow, certainly not here either. But even though we had been married for 45 years at the time, I was asked, after he had his interview, if we had any plans to divorce ...

Ah the Swiss Makers (Schwiezermacher). I thought they died out in the 1970s...
That's how I greeted them when they walked in.
They were not amused.

And my garages and office are no better!

I would like to thank everyone for helping me understand what was a very "Kafkaesque" experience. I would like to end by saying "Better an end with horror than a horror without end". Grazie Mille!
