I would like to thank everyone for helping me understand what was a very "Kafkaesque" experience. I would like to end by saying "Better an end with horror than a horror without end". Grazie Mille!
Also "Kafkaesque", when they visited us some many years ago they said they had their boots on so would not enter our apartment - they just stood in the doorway!
Luckily they did not ask us to bring our fridge or our wardrobe to our door.

He is American - salad is deadly

to the OP, must have been a very unpleasant experience - must they must have had reasons to believe you were not 'married' in the full sense of the term. Believe me, sham marriages for immigration reasons are unfortunately very common.
No, they always eat a salad before a huge pizza.

We all know there're some (objective) reasons or rules for these inquires, however, that doesn't necessarily mean people are mentally prepared to face these experiences themselves. It always happens to someone else and "it must be a reason for that". When it happens to us everything is kafkaesque and becomes theatre of the absurd. As an expat forum we should (probably) show more empathy or understanding...at least out of politeness. ;-)

OP, there's also a movie directed by directed by Aki Kaurismaki "The man without a past" with a genius scene that goes something along the lines
"He has amnesia and doesn't remember who he is but he speaks perfect Finnish"
"Oh, these pesky foreigners - they learn fast"

In short: take it easy. :-)

That's not what you do being the Swiss part of the couple. The spouse wanting to become Swiss would not appreciate that/feel supported, so you go along with this shit for their sake

I suppose I would find the bank check to be far less obtrusive. I would be really angry is someone was looking at my wardrobe and my underwear.
