What's Up with the "Swiss House Police"?

My husband is a Swiss citizen whom was born in Ticino. I recently put in for a renewal of my B Permit (now at the 5th year). So in my humble opinion "All is Good", just waiting on the completion of the paperwork. Well, don't speak too soon, because at 8:15AM we heard a knocking at the door. When we answered it was "Surprise Inspection" by the equivalent of the Police of our home. It was explained that this was connected to my renewal request for the B Permit. Well anyway, to make a long story shorter, we were insulted on several occasions. They criticised our lighting choices because we do not like overhead lighting (to bright for our purposes). They actually asked us to open our refrigerator and wanted to see inside of our clothing closets. Some of the questions they asked were extremely invasive. Can anyone here give me an idea of what's up with these arses?

They want to ascertain that you are still married and living with your husband and not about to divorce him soon?

God forbid they ever ask to look in mine, they would have a heart attack!

And my garages and office are no better!

- Did you ask for any official form of identification?
- Verify with your local commune/Gemeinde?

Not a good idea to call the Swiss police bad names, a frontaliera just lost her job for that!

If they introduced themselves as the "Swiss House Police" with a "Surprise Inspection" you should probably report it to double check with the authorities. Didn't you ask for any ID?

Definitely sounds dodgy.

These 'arses' as you call them, were most probably officials from the Femdenpolizei acting upon your renewal request. It might be that there were doubts of one kind or another in regards to your marriage.

The things they did when checking the wardrobe and fridge, was to see whether you really live at this address and are married.

And I am pretty certain that the questions you thought to be invasive, were to ascertain that your marriage is not a sham (to get a residental permit).

How suspicions arised I don't know either, but this looks to me as a standard procedure check-up of the Local Fremdenpolizei/Migrationsamt.

Re: What's Up with the "Swiss House Police"?

polizia cantonali, by order of immigration authorities. Normal procedure when asking for facilitated naturalization. Not heard of it for B renewal.

And then it depends on the police-men - some are jerks and some are very civilized. We had no problems, no looking into cupboards and fridges. In fact they didn't even want to see the rest of the flat although my husband offered.

Where is Tom when you need him? Since it's Ticino, I'm going to take a wild guess that the visit was to determine whether they should update you to a C permit now that you've been here 5 years and are married to a Swiss citizen.

We did see their ID's, otherwise they would not have been let in.

Re: What's Up with the "Swiss House Police"?

I can understand looking in the wardrobes to see whether you both had clothes in them but the fridge?

How does that work?

If it's full of beer, there must be a man living there and if it's full of Movenpick ice-cream, it has to be a woman?

What's a couple's fridge contents look like?

They did not use those exact words but in essence that was the implication. And yes, we did see ID's.

So did they actually comment on the lighting in any meaningful way or just in passing, sort of just to make conversation?
