Women cannot buy cars!

Sigh. So my beloved Disco has died before her time. Which puts me in the market to get another 4WD, with a 2nd hand Toyota Land Cruiser being my target.

Lots of trawling on anibis, autoscout, ricardoauto and other random websites. Lots of analysis (being the geek I am) for mileage vs age vs fitted extras vs price.

I find "the truck" and book an appointment in my name, with the Toyota dealer in another Kanton. Show up at the allotted time, and meet the dealership owner who is quick to get matey with my OH. OH is quick to advise that its going to be my vehicle, that I am the buyer, and confirms that its my money for any purchase. Dealer laughs, and continues to focus all attention on my fella.

This isn't such a bad thing - it means I can crawl all over the vehicle and its engine and underside without interruption.

We're offered a test drive, and dealer offers keys to OH with an offer to take as long as he needs, the dealer will stay in the office. OH promptly gives the keys to me, and dealer decides to come on the drive with us.

We return from the drive, and I state that I wish to purchase the vehicle for the full asking price and hold out my hand to shake that of the dealer. He is however distracted by something, and the handshake is avoided. Into the dealer's office, who wants to write up the contract in OH's name. When I and OH insist on contract in my name dealer says (in his best Frenglish "femmes do not buy cars like this, it is impossible".

Sigh.

After getting the contract into my name, he then asks for OH to sign the contract, and to organise the insurance and payment. At which point, I've had enough. Contract not signed, vehicle not purchased, and my hunt continues.

This isn't an instance exclusive to Switzerland. I had a very similar experience, twice, when trying to buy a motorbike for myself in the UK.

FFS!

That happened to my mum in the UK in the 80s. They refused to let her have a test drive so you went to another dealer, got the test drive, bought the car and then went to fill up with petrol at the original garage so they could see the commission they had lost.

Re: Women cannot buy cars!

Oh dear- sorry about the Disco. We had a total nightmare with ours earlier this year, 10 years old, 100.000 miles - eveything conked out at the same time

But for women buying cars - yes, daughter had same issue when she bought her Jag FPace last year - but she told them where to go, in no uncertain terms- got a discount and paid there and then. In the UK.

Re: Women cannot buy cars!

One car supermarket who shall remain nameless when we went in to buy the mrs a new car asked what we where after, something fun for my wife, so off the salesman leads us to an 80,000chf 700bhp wildcat, not exactly what we had in mind, he then lost all interest in us. lol, his loss, we bought elsewhere a couple of days later.

It’s a traditional pistonheads anecdote.

The perfect ending is that it was a V8 and the owner did some donuts on the first dealers forecourt, slept with the salesman’s wife, before giving him the middle finger as he roared away into the sunset.

No, that's the Michael Caine and Rolls Royce dealer story.

My mum was buying a lowly Peugeot!

Even though the sales man's behavior was sexist, I must admit that I've never seen a woman driving a Landcruiser either . A Discovery is much more feminine.

It's a car, not a dress!

Right. So when my wife brings me along to buy her car, she signals that I'm the decision maker. And when I bring my wife along to buy my car, I'm signalling that she's the decision maker.

I saw plenty of women driving Toyota Landcruisers when I was in Australia recently.

I'm surprised the OP put up with such dumb behaviour for so long. "You are clearly not seriously interested in making a sale. Goodbye".

Sorry for your incident, but why this generalization? I'm pretty sure women can buy cars here. You had just one bad experience caused by an idiot.

Re: Women cannot buy cars!

Not al all the same thing, but when I owned my own car(OH couldn’t even drive) I went to the garage for the annual service and MOT (UK) and told them that it was slow to fill up with petrol because there was probably a blockage in the bleeder tube, you know, the tube that bleeds the air out of the tank when you are filling up. The mechanic said something alsong the lines of what would you know about it, leave it to us to know what is wrong. When I picked up with OH they told him that there was a blockage in the bleeder tube, and then mansplained to me what the bleeder tube was..... I said, yes, I told you that when I dropped the car off, and my OH said that he had no idea what he was talking about, he knows nothing about cars and leaves that all to me as he didn’t drive. The air was still blocked from leaving the engine after a month, which meant that filling up would time out as I kept having to do so slowly and allow the car to burp. The next year, same thing...... From then on I had to take my man so he could explain what was wrong, I had to prime him first. Then I would another garage not in the 19th century and all was good.

Should have stood next to your OH with him repeating your words to the mechanic as you said them
