Ripped off by multiple taxis in Neuchatel

Summary:

- I have taken 4 taxis in Neuchatel in the span of 3 months
- Took a taxi from my hotel to interview location (20 min), charged 55 CHF
- Interview company called me a taxi back with their chosen taxi company and only charged 25 CHF. When I told the taxi driver, he told me never to trust another company.
- Forgot this and took a taxi from the train station to my temporary new home, gave the driver my address, he went the other direction completely, got lost for over 20 min and after some argument would barely go down on price to 100 CHF.
- Tonight I missed the bus from work and called the supposedly “safe taxi company” and was charged 65 CHF for a 5 minute taxi ride. He never even turned on his meter. I argued and was only yelled at in French and gave up after new hire fatigue.

What’s going on? Can I report this anywhere? Obviously never taking a taxi in Neuchatel again.

Thanks!

Has Uber made it to Neuchatel? Used it successfully in Zurich & Geneva, great value.

I think it is here, but never any cars free. I used to not use them since I thought they put good people out of work, but about to use them in these parts if I could purely on principal now. (Basel has great taxi drivers who have been financially hurt by Uber.)

What time was tonight? Night rates are more expensive.

Fact is, taxis are just not the 'done thing' in Switzerland- unlike in some countries. Get to know a taxi, discuss your concerns- and use them only, perhaps.

Re: Ripped off by multiple taxis in Neuchatel

I'm sorry you were ripped off. Here are some tips to help make your taxi trips work better.

1. Inform yourself. Look up some fares online, for example here:
http://www.taxisroland.ch/tarifs/tarifs.html

2. Be punctual. Taxi drivers have a tariff for "waiting time". If you call them for 19h30, but you only come out of the building to the car at 19h40, then you owe them the 10 minutes during which their lives were ticking away waiting for you. This is sometimes an additional, separate part of the total charge, over and above the kilometres and the time, while some other taxis simply start the kilometer-and-time meter running from the minute you said they should be there.

3. Inform yourself. Know the route before hand. Put a gps on your own mobile phone. As soon as you see the driver deviating, question him/her, and decide whether to follow his/her or your gps.

4. Always specify your destination when you phone to call the taxi, and ask then what the approximate fare will be. Have that amount of cash available, plus a little more.

5. When the taxi arrives and before you get in, ask again what the approximate fare will be. Pay no more than was arranged, with a small exception, for example if you get stuck in traffic, because the tariff is a mix of "kilometres travelled" and "time spent", and the driver cannot predict unexpected waiting times, on account of traffic, but his/her meter will charge for that time, too.

6. As you fasten your seatbelt, check that the meter is switched on. If it is not, ask for it, politely. If the driver tries to tell you you don't need it, say that you do, because you need to hand in all the proper details to your bookkeeper (even if you are she).

7. Sit in the font seat, not at the back. It places you in better connection with the driver, and you can see the meter and the gps.

8. Do not be rude to taxi drivers. Unless a taxi driver harmed you, it is common to give a tip, by rounding up the amount. If you are unpleasant, and if you pay only the exact amount on the dot, if you arrive late, (see above) or if you place stress on the driver by urging him to drive too fast (to reach a plane, for example), your mobile number gets put on a blacklist, and this will quickly result in the nice drivers not wanting to drive for you at all. Or, for the dishonest ones among them, it will increase their willingness to try to rip you off, at least once each.

9. Remember that just as you would like to be able to trust them and rely on them, so they, too, appreciate having stable, trustworthy and polite guests. Therefore, try to build a good relationship with some taxi drivers who were polite and reasonable. Ask for and store their personal phone numbers, so you can call them directly without going through their central switchboard. Greet them by name. Tip them well. Be a loyal client, and you stand a high chance of getting consistently good service.

Thanks very much, I assure you I am as polite and usually aware as can be & I frequently take taxis without issue in the German part of Switzerland.

Umm, they didn't all use a meter? You didn't check this?

Re: Ripped off by multiple taxis in Neuchatel

Maybe I’ve been in Switzerland for too long but 55chf for a 20 minute journey sounds about right to me.

There does appear to have been a dramatic increase in the number of taxis operating in Neuchâtel over the years since we’ve lived here.
Taxi Roland mentioned by doropfiz above is one of the reputable and reliable companies.
Many of the larger companies here have ‘deal’ with one of the taxi firms and offer preferential rates for them so try to take advantage of that.

When my husband was doing the weekly commute thing he took taxis very often and he built up a rapport with one of the drivers. He used him exclusively after a while and would phone him directly and after we all moved here he continued to use him if he needed a taxi to the station for business trips etc even though he was not the one generally used by his company. If you are regularly taking taxis this might be something to consider.

I think you have been very unlucky in your dealings so far, in my experience of taking taxis here they are generally pretty fair and up front about their costs.

Re: Ripped off by multiple taxis in Neuchatel

1. Go Uber if you can...

2. Don't confuse taxi's with private hire cabs. The company probably called a private hire cab (i.e. fixed price, agreed beforehand, etc). A street taxi (with a meter) is a different thing. Note that one car/driver can be both...

My challenge is to convince the drivers to obey the speed limits and to drive as if I am not late for a plane.

As, in Switzerland, the meter price is ‘service compris’ 15% (??) I once asked the driver to reduce the fare by the tip amount because he had driven so badly. He had a million reasons why he couldn’t do that, but I believe that is my right. N’est pas?

I normally round up to the next 5 but that shouldn’t be expected.

Aaaand these are exactly the reasons why I use UBER and don't use taxis. It's easier to select a surgeon than a taxi driver, screw em. They're not getting my hard-earned CHF for quite some time now and the UBER drivers have ALWAYS been clean, nice, punctual and 0 surprises re cost.

I lived in CH for 20 years & never took a taxa as they were a rip off, I use UBER all the time as a visitor as it's reasonably priced. In ZH the Uber's were normal taxi's so some taxi drivers have benefited as they are always booked rather than sitting outside the main station for an hour waiting for a victim tourist.

Yep, blame the customer. A taxi should be a hassle-free, easy experience. That's why I only use Uber now (if anything).

Re: Ripped off by multiple taxis in Neuchatel

I once tried to take the taxi waiting at the taxi stop from the train stationwhere I live. A short ride that costs 15 CHF. The taxi driver made some lame excuse about waiting for someone else. It turns out he found the distance too short for his liking. I use Uber now.I call one on the train and it is there when I arrive. I rode in a Tesla the other day for 9 CHF. He was polite too.

I wonder why the op needed to test taxis 4 times to work out they are expensive with a tendancy to rip you off wherever possible.

I'm sure this doesn't happen anywhere else in the world apart from Neuchatel.....

As I’ve said before, I’m a new hire and left the office late. For once I wasn’t paying attention and in my fatigue, trusted my employers chosen taxi company.
