When we try and enjoy the simplicity of a couple of candles and dim lights, we suddenly feel we're in a frigging funfair. With the exception of closing all the shutters and live like barricaded victims, is there anything one can do (talking to them nicely is not an option... just going and knocking on their door would give them the excuse to try and sue you for trespassing, they have done it with another neighbour!)
It looks like there is.

Light is an effect covered by the environmental protection laws, the general approach is to only use/create as much light as is necessary, and to avoid at the source rather than block at the receiving end.

Both federal and Cantonal governments recommend checking darksky.ch for information and, where necessary, help. darksky.ch also feature lists of whom to contact as of course this is a communal and Cantonal thing.

The recommendation is to document your case, which may include filming inside your apartment when your neighbor's LEDs are on, and to present it to the communal authorities as they're responsible for enacting the federal laws and regulations (toghether with the communal autorities).

... and a few floors above several windows are shining bright neonlight into our house (no shutters or curtains apparently, or don't know what they are used for)
[..]
As for those neighbours in the appt. block, we now save energy as we don't need to switch on the light in the downstairs loo nor the kitchen.
That one appears to be clear: The neighbor is to install shutters or dim the lights. Or both.

Here is an article similar to your situation. The court decided in favour of the person claiming the lights were a disturbance. Go to police and make a complaint. Why do you mess around?

Re: Neighbour's led lights into our home

We kind of all heard those stories before... just with reversed roles this time:
https://www.englishforum.ch/housing-...as-lights.html

I'd still suggest the same sort of well measured response I did back then: Get some Flakscheinwerfer sized lighting and show him!

Depends on the commune, Nachtruhe generally addresses noise only. Zürich city's police ordinance includes all kinds of immissions including light, but they may well be the exception rather than the rule.

Simply smash the lights. Maybe he will try to charge you but your defence in court should win

Why not get some stage lights and make an exclusive light show for the neighbour?

Just leave a passive-aggressive note in their postbox....with many many exclamation marks!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!* as to emphasise your outrage, vague threats with contacting owner association, municipality and even police....

*learned it from the Swiss, this one. It doesn't really matter who's right or wrong here..:-)

I have both!

Once, someone 500m away was shining a laser in my kitchen window, so I got one of mine and lasered back.

He stopped!

It's interesting that you should mention this. Because essentially everything suggested here is exactly that - passive-aggressive. Ok, OP excluded direct confrontation, but that should have those who find passive-aggressive that detestable all the more seek help by the authorities.

But of course this is different ... somehow ... after all only the Swiss do passive-aggressive

Re: Neighbour's led lights into our home

In my opinion, and unless you're a complete c*nt, do the following:

-Have a friendly talk with your neighboor. If that's not an option, a friendly letter asking the lights to be switched off after 10pm at the very least.

-If that doesn't work, involve the police.

-IF they don't act, then call the boulevard media. Blick and/or 20min will have a field day. Call the neighboor a nazi (and possibly have another 2-3 victims ready) and the police will get an URGENT-URGENT call to finally get their act together

Haha, or just endure till the holidays are over? It's already 9th of December, the whole thing will last about 20 more days. Use the curtains.

Are said neighbours Swiss? This is Geneva sfter all. If they are, and you are not, stop wasting your time. Close your shutters and curtains and hide in your basement. !!!!!!!

If they are not Swiss tell them you are calling the police. If you do call mention they are foreigners. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is, she's French...both loathed in the whole village. BUT someone else must have said something (probably neighbours next to us who were even more in the firing line) as I've noticed the wretched lights have not been on for the last two nights. Fingers crossed.

They must have done some something seriously bad to be loathed in the whole village. McTavge, you have a very interesting life there....I'm almost envious!
