Beware of Salt

Be careful when signing up for a contract with Salt.

I would recommend against it in the first place, as they are overpriced and predatory. I feel stupid for going with them - it was rush decision.

What happened specifically to me is that when getting my phone and signing my contract, I was asked if I wanted phone insurance. I answered no (and I'm sure, because I think I makes sense to not buy insurance on things that you can afford to pay for out of pocket). However, an extra line about insurance ended up on my contract and I missed it. It didn't mention a price.

When I checked my bill the first month, it was the price as expected for my plan. What I didn't look at closely enough is that they had indeed billed me for the insurance, but then given a matching rebate the first month.

I only noticed some months later (yeah, I should have been looking more closely) that I was being charged 10.90 a month for "care" (not labelled as insurance).

To cancel this insurance they require a 3 month notification.

So, be very very careful when dealing with this company, if you must, and assume that they are out to get every Rappen that they can out of you.

You can say a lot about Salt but not that they are overpriced.

Re: Beware of Salt

I've used Salt for years (remember the days of Orange?) without any problems and found the price to be fairly competitive for what I need. Then again, I'm pretty good at reading stuff before I sign up. I have a special antennae for small-print...

I think they are! Especially when you factor in the extra cost of little extras like this.

Definitely will be more careful next time, but I think that it's still a reason to recommend against a company, if I can't assume that the person signing me up for a contract won't add things I explicitly said I didn't want.

they have 50% discount offers all the time.
for example, i pay 20 CHF per month for unlimited phone and internet in Switzerland. there are not many providers that are that cheap.

Salt? Very corrosive. Wash it off as soon as you can.

If we have to recommend against every company where a fault did slip through due to the customer not reading what he signs than the only option for me to get a phone is to build one myself. Since I will not be doing this, I'll be very pleased to become a salt customer.

Re: Beware of Salt

I think there is an element of truth with this, in that some of their offerings, when discounted, are very attractive, but you're sitting up for two years with an automatic renewal at full price after that. And in many cases the full price deal would not be attractive in itself. It's clear that this is what you're signing up for, though, so if, through changing circumstances or just carelessness, you find your monthly direct debit has doubled you've no-one to blame but yourself.

And to be fair, after the discounted deal has finished, you can cancel at any time, unlike, for example, insurance or credit cards where you need to give the months notice otherwise you're committed to the whole year ahead.

Edit: just read the OP, which was about unwanted phone insurance. Never had anything like that with Salt, so no reason to think it's any more likely and certainly not to suggest that they do this deliberately. All else apart, what were you doing talking to someone in the first place, rather than just doing everything online where you can see exactly what you're doing?

I got my discounted contract unlimited with 2 years lock period, so now I can cancel whenever I'd like, but who would ditch such cheap option

+1, I avoid talking to sales people whenever I can order things in written form!

Re: Beware of Salt

They are predatory. I had their mobile internet and my internet dongle pops up a roaming menu everytime I'm near the border. I had it in my bag and somehow the wrong button got pushed. Anyway, for few minutes of internet I paid over 300CHF. They didn't want to meet me half way so I moved to Sunrise, where the roaming is blocked on their website. I'll never again go to Salt.

How is that even possible? The only way I could imagine this would be if you 'accidentally' signed up for a new subscription, which would imply something a little more careless than just 'somehow' pressing a wrong button.

The fact that Salt won't compromise once you've already signed up for something doesn't make them predatory, just Swiss.

Well yes, I had my dongle in my bag and when roaming is available the menu comes up automatically. Before I realized that I'm roaming it was too late. Video streaming = lots of MB = lots of money for Salt. It's not even capped or something.

Tnx but no tnx. They can be swiss^3 but this roaming stuff is predatory, a gold mine and it's outdated. But feel free to be their customer. Im tired of this companies with low prices and traps, just wait for you to make a mistake.

Re: Beware of Salt

I am with Salt (formerly known as Orange) for over 20yrs! Never had a problem, I jot down the date when my contract's up for renewal on a post-it and head to the shop a week before it ends to make a new contract. I then sit down in shop and read through BEFORE signing and so always have the best deal without any nasty surprises. Sll it takes is just a tiny bit of brainpower.

@OP like many other peeps have said before, it helps to read everything through thoroughly, just saying no and thinking everything will be done acc. your wishes is not the best way in regards to entering a contract with whomever. Control is always better. To 'warn' others to stay away from a company, coz you didn't switch on YOUR brain.....well it is not all a company's fault.

@icecold, it is a well known fact, that consumer mags etc warn about, that being close to the border can cause inadvertant roaming. It is the owner of the devices' responsibilty to check that roaming is off or take pecautionary measures......

Again it seems to me that nowadays people want everything done for them, served on a silverplste without swicthing their brain on..... and when stuff goes haywire or they get a reminder of their own carelessness, it's slways the other party's fault......

Funny cause Sunrise does that but Salt has a different policy. I guess they are not as predatory as Salt. My yearly subscription at Salt was 420chf + 15 min roaming 300chf. So be aware of companies like that... they look cheap at first, but they have their ways to pull that extra money out of your pockets.

Re: Beware of Salt

Salt is operating in Switzerland, but it is not, and never have been Swiss.
It was owned by France Telecom, then sold to Apax for 1.6 billion euros, which made a huge reorganization of the company (involving significant lay offs and a major transformation of nearly the entire IT Applications landscape (including customer care and billing system and many more)), then sold it to the current owner, Xavier Niel (a French guy), for 2.3 billion euros.
His mobile company in France is called Free Mobile.
Nomen est omen.
