1st May: no public holiday

I came to complaints corner to ask how is it even possible that 1st May is not a public holiday!

Why does it have to be? No, not a public holiday in all Kantons.

Is there something more beautiful than celebrating labor day by working?

It depends where you are, it is a public holiday in a lot of places.

What difference does it make anyway? Almost all of us have had 4 weeks off and if you're stuck at home unable to go out and socialise what else is there to do??

Re: 1st May: no public holiday

In South Africa, the lockdown was recently extended until 30th April, whereafter there will be some relief, in stages. Today 27th April is a public holiday called Freedom Day, commemorating the first post-apartheid elections held on that day in 1994.

The South Africans joke that this year, on Freedom Day they're locked up, and they'll be let out to go back to work again on Workers' Day.

Exactly, we need a neighbouring canton in which to shop on our 'glorious' day off

Because nobody thought it worth while to go through the procedure to hold a referendum to decide if we do or don't want it to be a federal holiday. I think a few cantons have decide to have it as a public holiday.

I agree. I have been working from home for more than 6 weeks now in addition to supporting my children in Fernunterricht. Luckily I live in Kanton ZH and am looking forward to Friday when I don't have to work and can do something with my children instead.

Re: 1st May: no public holiday

In Geneva, I think, Government offices are closed. But I think that’s about it. It isn’t a cantonal holiday.

Re: 1st May: no public holiday

Hate to be 'that guy' but I have to say it: there are many who have been laid off and would have been happy to work on Friday.

There will be other days off soon (May 21st , June 1st)

Thanks for being that guy, so true. I think here we don't have Friday off. But glad to have the employment opportunity. Even if it means we are working twice as much as before the confinement.

Re: 1st May: no public holiday

It is a public holiday in Zurich and Basel. I work in Zurich and my OH works in Basel. Nice to live in Bern on May 1st...too bad we can't properly enjoy it due to the lock down, but that's OK.

Re: 1st May: no public holiday

It's a public holiday in Aargau, Basel-Land, Basel-Stadt, Fribourg, Jura, Schaffhausen, Solothurn, Thurgau, Ticino, Zurich.

However if you work in a company with a collective agreement often the Trade Unions get the 1st of May as an extra day off for all employees in the contract.
