I believe hiking sticks are a valid alternative, or if you're feeling more traditional a quarterstaff makes an excellent hiking aid and might be a little more robust.

In return I recommend all mountainbikers should find accessories from the 90's and stick on the bullhorn bar ends. Optional extra would be to descend on the small ring leaving the saw tooth big ring exposed.
