Trolls........

Does this message board actually get moderated? I've noticed of late there are an awful lot of newbies posting, some of them with silly questions or problems. I also suspect a number of them may be the same person and the attempts at trying to write poor English as they're supposed to have English as a second language are laughable.

The Corona topic should answer your question.

Re: Trolls........

Yes, this forum does get moderated. Some mods are frequently active here, others less so, some take their task seriously, others less so, some have a greater tolerance for nonsense, agression and nastiness on the forum (and some even produce some of it themselves), and others are much more frequently polite and helpful.

All the mods have two things in common, consistently.
  • They are not paid to do any of the work they do on this forum.
  • Sooner or later, someone somewhere on the forum, including you and me, and I hazard a guess just about every user, at times, questions or doesn't like what they do, or what they omit to do.

Having said that, yes, I agree with you that some individuals or possibly groups of people make new usernames, and post destructively, because they think it is funny. Being provocative or appearing helpless is, for some, a sport, who knows why. It seems to please such people to get a reaction, just that. This phenomenon seems to roll over us in waves. If they are trolls, then best not to feed them.

Some newbies genuinely don't understand how things work here, and what may seem like an unbelievable silly question to you, or to me, may be completely genuine to them, given their own cultural background, level or distress, or their age.

I don't doubt some of the newbies on here are genuine, but it's also obvious which ones are trolls.

Re: Trolls........

Perhaps. But what seems obvious to some may not seem obvious to others, and vice versa.

While some users here are considered by some to be mainstays of the forum, witty, interesting and helpful, those very same posters are considered, by others, to be major producers of nonsense and trouble. Yet others don't maintain a fixed view of a user, but assess each of their posts on its own merit, or lack thereof.

Fora (not just this one) have taught me that what counts as valid criticism for some, is seen as aggression by others, what counts as vitriol and unnecessary nastiness by some is considered just a little good-hearted banter by others. Some see those who are compassionate as oversensitive, others are glad of their tolerance and acceptance. Some regard those who don't abide by the rules as wild, daring and bold, while yet others see those same people as not taking responsibility or even as childish.

It's very, very subjective. Best to read the parts that interest one, and learn to detect and quickly skip over what doesn't seem to do one any good. And then, once in a while, not often, but occasionally, someone can actually shift their own perspective and modify their own behaviour and moderate their own posts.

As to the possible trolls (or whomever seems to annoy one), the less one feeds them the better.

What annoys me in the moderation is that repeatingly posting false information or representing opinions as facts to disrupt a discussion is defended by the mods as "but he's allowed to share his opinion"

I another forum, of which I am a moderator, one member insisted that a newbie was a sockie (duplicate account of existing member). From various bits of information, I was able to establish that identity of the alleged sockie, the name of the company they were running, their home address, their facebook page and linkedin entry. I had their photo.

But it wasn't enough."No, I know he's a sockie".

Often though, it just isn't clear. The IP address might not match the first xxx.yyy.zzz, for example. And then you have to give people the benefit of the doubt - but watch them closely, and see if the behaviour repeats.

Trolls are sad pathetic pale imitations of humans. Eventually, they give themselves away.

I'm just amazed I haven't been spotted yet.

Re: Trolls........

Be careful about bashing the latest "newbies". A lot of people popped up who registered a long time ago.
Either they got retired or Corona left them no choice but come back on EF to have a little human contact.
So give them a little TLC rather then chase them away being prejudice.

Btw. we have a lot of old members to replace to keep this forum going.

Perhaps they come in with what they think is a genuine problem, get groaned and laughed at and do not return for obvious reasons...

Actually quite a few have their absurdly obvious troll nonsense answered at great length - involving the responders in considerable time and effort...

I have experienced both sides of this - there were some very nice people who wrote to me, went for drinks with me and left nice comments on my homepage.
There were sadly also a good number of those who were and continue to this day to be abusive and leave abusive comments on my homepage.

The mods seem to have dealt with it pretty well in the main, banning one of the users who abused me and the mod who abused me is no longer allowed to participate in threads I am in.

I can see how those with a thinner skin would run at the first sign of abuse though - was it Mr Dog or something like that only last week who did this?

I've not heard of that option before. How did you achieve that? I think there might be quite a number of users who would, at times, like to have that level of protection.

I wrote to the mods detailing what I felt were abuses of power, they agreed and let me know said mod would not involve his or herself on threads in which I was participating.
