Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

I just received yet another call from what appears in the directory to be a call center. I can receive dozens of these calls every week from both fixed and mobile numbers, but whenever I answer the line is completely silent (no call center background noise) then the call gets disconnected within a second or two. It almost seems as though some kids are pulling a practical joke by calling me over and over again only to hang up every time, except these numbers are generally shown in tel.search.ch to be from call centers. No one is ever trying to sell me anything.

Does anyone else have this problem? It is infuriating, as I have to answer every incoming call because I have some serious health problems and I receive lots of phone calls related to this.

Does anyone else have this problem of constant unsolicited phone calls with no "content"? I wish there was something I could do about it.

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

I can't be sure this is what is happening to you, but a lot of times these cold callers have an autodialing system that only connects an operator on their end once someone picks up.

So it's usually not a person calling a number and waiting for you to answer, it's a machine calling and connecting you to a free worker in their system. There can be a gap between you answering the call and the operator accepting the allocation.

Absolute pain in the arse all around though.

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

They have a computer making the calls. When it gets through, it's registered on the call centre system as "active". Now think of the operator. They've just finished harrassing someone and need a new victim - but there are three active calls. So he picks one. The other two people think "what? another silent call?" and hang up.

But don't worry. Now you've answered, they know it's a real number and will keep trying. You should block any such numbers.

I have the search.ch app on my mobile phone. It mutes any calls from numbers that are from a call centre, and I don't see them until they've given up. I then block the number. On my landline, all calls go to voicemail. Anyone who wants to talk to me urgently will leave a message.

Nope, always Swiss numbers, most of which can be found in the directory. And the same numbers (or families of numbers) over and over again.

I know what you're referring to but it's not that, either. The call is always disconnected by the other party shortly after I answer.

This advice is GOLD, thanks so much! Will download the app asap, it's very convenient that anything coming from a registered call centre is automatically muted, as I like to leave my ringer on during the day.

its exactly that, no one was ready to talk to you so it hangs up, but don't worry, they'll call you back - a lot

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

I quite often don't say anything after I pick up, and this seems to trigger the call to be cut off, so I'm guessing that the automated system only connects to an operator when it detects a voice, not simply when the call is received. It's a useful tool in it's own right - if there's not a real person on the other end immediately then it's a call centre and one can cut the call without even hearing them.

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

The more you react, by picking up the phone, whether you speak or not, whether or not there is an operator speaking when you do answer, the more likely their bot is to register your number as one worth calling again.

One call-centre agent explained to me that their bot is sent out first, to detect numbers that will be answered at all. All the "never answers" are filtered out, and only the "answers sometimes" are then delivered to a second bot. That bot then autodials and refers any responder to be spoken to by a real human agent, if one is available. If all their agents are busy just then, then as others have said the call is dropped, but the number stays in the "demonstrates that the call will be answered, at all" list, for re-dialing and re-dialing, later.

Do they say how the system deals with voicemail? These days probably >90% of numbers will have voicemail or answerphone of some sort, does the bit manage to detect those and filter them out of the 'will probably answer' list?

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

If interested for a fixed line, this model has an integrated "filter" :

https://www.conrad.ch/fr/p/telephone...ir-629439.html

It will only ring if the incoming number is in the adress book, else it will only flash a red light and a light beep when the call is over. The caller can leave a message like a normal combox.

Tested and approved by my wife who works from home, no more noisy unwanted calls when in a skype meeting.

That's a good question. I don't know. And would be interested to know if there really would be a technical way for a bot to distinguish.

Although I do know an increasing number of people who have done away with their voicemail or answerphone - not only privately but professionally. That surprised me at first, but they say they are much happier, at is is just one more way of streamlinging things.

I refuse to answer any calls where I don’t recognise the number. Goes through to the answering machine. If it is important they will leave a message. But almost nobody does.

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

I get loads of these calls...most I just ignore but then worry in case its someone I actually want to chat too.

The worst are health care insurance....

However for three years now I get calls for a Herr Farino...gave up informing them its not me...just ignore all calls now if I don't recognise the number, when my phone suggests its a spam or marketing company I block the number.

Re: Large number of calls from call centres, but never any person on the line. Why?

This has suddenly picked up for me as well

While I generally don't answer calls from unknown numbers (and I am one of those who have done away with voicemail) sometimes I do. And if it's a silent call/call center, I save the number in my address book under the name "DO NOT ANSWER" (and you can save quite a few numbers under one contact) - so you know for next time.

And - I also use my phone's "report spam" option as well.

I'm sorry you're going through this - it's incredibly annoying.

Same situation, and when there is a person on other side they never tell you their location and with N number of request they won’t remove you from their database.

I get a lot of these calls and suspect it's often potential burglars who want to know if someone is at home. Usually the phone rests silent but sometimes there is a female voice saying in English: Good bye - before disconnecting.

Same here - pick up , stay sllent even when 'the operator' starts his "I am ..and you are?"and once no response it's the operator that things got ghosted and marks that number as in-service but not used.

Also I integrated some provider telephone book into spam callers on my iphone - works in 50% of cases I'd say

Not much use if they’re ringing a mobile number, even if you do answer you could be in Timbuktu for all they know.

Whenever a spam call comes asking to speak to Mr Nickatbasel I have several responses.

Tearfully inform them, "we buried him this morning".

Announce that they are speaking to DI Knacker of the Yard, that this is the scene of a murder, and what was their relationship with the deceased. And that we are tracing the call and if they hang up we'll do them for compromising a police investigation.

Cheers,
Nick

I think you've let paranoia get the better of you. You're appearing to suggest that you'd be burgled every time you failed to pick up on one of these calls. How often do you normally get burgled?
