Masks are effective only when used properly, changed every few hours and once put never taken out unless you change it immediately. Which is something that nobody is doing.

You have more chances of infection with those cloth masks than without them IMO. People carry them in pockets, wrap them around arms and than they "protect" themselves with all the germs caught on the way.

Distance and hygyne seems to be the best weapon so far

Masks are like condoms, more effective protecting the others than oneself there's nothing wrong with that.

There're places where you can't keep the right distance. On a different thread people decried the restrictions imposed on certain economic/social activities when it's virtually impossible to control distance among people, so what is it in the end?
To me it seems some of you here are moving the goalposts all the time so every logical/medical recommendation would look redundant and /or hysterical.

Unless you have the valve masks. I bought some in January (not knowing anything about masks at the time).

Was on the train this morning in first class from Bern to Zurich. A woman got on with the mask around her chin only and proceeded to apply makeup and talk on her phone for the entire journey. I commented to the train attendant and he just nodded his head and shrugged his shoulders. He mentioned something to her politely and she said she was a "government employee" which only makes her behavior worse. I doubt it was even true...

Since I'm going through a difficult time, I decided perhaps it was best not to cross this woman today as I might take it too far. I do see some who are perhaps mentally incapacitated locally on the trams etc. and I leave them be...but when I see a healthy young woman who just wants to do what she wants to do without the consideration of others, it really chaps my hide.
If I was the ticket guy I would have asked for her government id and if she couldn't provide it,hand her a fine!

They have to toughen up on these people or it makes the whole thing a farce!

Re: Mask dodgers

He did ask for an ID, which is how I learned she is not Swiss (B or C permit).

But he can't fine her anything... he could kick her off the train, but that's it. We all know that won't happen with SBB coming under fire for delays recently. From what I witnessed/could hear, it was a rather friendly conversation. And I guess why shouldn't it be? There are no consequences for not following the rule.

...In addition to seeing people not wear masks and clearly not care, it also really annoys me when I see people wearing masks with it pulled down below their nose.
I understand some of those folks though, at least for short times. Many people with eyeglasses will at least sometimes wear the mask below the nose, because the mask makes the glasses fog up and you can't see where you're going.

How do you know they're foreigners? Maybe they're locals that don't care. People that don't give a shi* can come from everywhere, even Switzerland.

Honestly, people were always off in their own worlds doing whatever. The pandemic has simply made it more noticeable how inconsiderate folks can be.

That seems true in the case of public transport. From what I've seen there's no actual fine for not wearing a mask, you can only be asked to get off at the next stop. I think an SBB spokesperson even said on the news that their conductors are not there to enforce mask laws and that they can only fine you for breaking transport laws. Something like that.

Essentially people are responsible for their well being by themselves, so keeping distance is something that should be done by yourself, it's common sense.

Well some of us want to have a logical thinking behind a decision. Remember when everybody was wearing gloves in beginning? Today is a big no-no. What if in 2 months they say the same thing about (cloth) masks?

Re: Mask dodgers

I propose that the cantonal authorities decide on an appropriate penalty for non compliance. Then they put out an invitation for all curtain-twitchers in Switzerland to perform a very valuable service. Give them a GA and invite them to travel up and down the country, a different destination every day, selecting rule breakers and either giving them a free mask, or instruct on proper wear, or issue a fine.

Give them half the amount of the fine for their trouble.

Bob's your uncle.

Perhaps it would be fair to make it legally compulsory and have the Government issue masks for free. The same should go for ladies' menstrual clobber, although not to say that should be compulsory, at least free.

I've been asked to come back to work, even though my company is the only big pharma who seems to and I can do my job 100 percent from home.
You've obviously chosen the wrong Big Pharma employer. Mine says I must stay at home.

Last week I had a covid-19 antibody test at their site. It was the first time I'd been on site in months. It was fun - wearing shorts, t-shirt, sandals, sun hat... Having enjoyed a liquid lunch. But I had my id! And that proves I can wear a suit and tie.

I do think there were so many mixed messages about the masks at the beginning, whether they actually worked or not.TThis is why I think some people don't take it seriously?
Maybe the public transport rule should have come in much earlier.

It’s not that people don’t think masks will work for them, It’s because some people don’t think they need protection.

I'm not positive, but I think at that point the inspector has to call the police, and then the police can issue a fine?

No need to check government ID. In this country there is one law for everyone.
If she was government employee she should be fired only for thinking otherwise.

I just saw Kassensturz influencer propose a more fun idea for the really scared ones. And he thought it through, he even has the solution for getting rid off the contamination collected while using the protection before going home.
