Rant: Motor Homes slowing down traffic

I've just come back from a day of driving over the alps. I've become accustomed to bikes, motorbikes and elderly drivers but now there seems to be an epidemic of a new type of driver on the road: elderly motor home drivers.

These people slow up the traffic considerably and quite often put others drivers in dangerous situations when trying to pass.

I can't face another slow poke motorhome today. By tomorrow, I'll be better again.

Re: Rant: Motor Homes slowing down traffic

As an elderly driver but without a motor home (I'm sorry to say), I would suggest you get up and out earlier in the mornings when you are going to drive over the alps. This is called 'learning from experience'. Can lead to wisdom.
When you are old yourself you'll appreciate my advice when you find yourself belonging to the elderly driver brigade.
Here's another bit of advice: Don't, when desiring to overtake a motor home or anything else actually, put yourself and others into a dangerous situation through frustration.
You and those others will be very thankful for your patience, skill, common sense and understanding. (although they may not notice it).

But at the moment just set the alarm clock a bit earlier. That'll do the trick.

Re: Rant: Motor Homes slowing down traffic

You'll see a lot more.

Motorhome sales have rocketed since the beginning of the first COVID-19 lockdown as people (especially elderly ones) still want to get out and about at the weekend but don't want to risk campsite or hotel bathrooms and restaurants etc.

They're basically taking their home with them.

I suspect motorhome insurance premiums will go up too as they, and the cars they drive into end up with various scratches and dents.

Bugsby,
1. Luckily we did leave relatively early so we ran into increased traffic on only one side of the pass.

2. As for passing, I agree one has to exercise extreme caution.

3. I’ve been going over the passes for the last 3o years. It used to be the motorcycles that became a nuisance. Then it was the bicyclists. And now it’s the motor homes. It’s been interesting you see how times have changed.

Agreed, absolute nightmare with those coming over Simplon the other day, returning from Lake Orta. Grrrr - and yes, a lot more this year as older people felt it would be safer than sharing HŰtels, etc.

Sartre. 'Huis Clos'.

See, I knew that eventually, if I waited a few decades, someday that class in Modern French Lit would prove useful.

So thanks, EF.

Now back to slow moving traffic...

I went on a bike ride this morning - it was the cars that were the nuisance!

Times haven't changed. People still remain in their intolerant bubbles.

Well, the A1 is not better. Not sure why they're allowed to go at 120 km/h. A motorhome trying to overtake trucks is a roadblock. Considering they have bad handling and most drivers have very limited experience driving them, they should go at 90 km/h max, like trucks.

Maybe they're not elderly. Maybe they're just stoned.

Or both.

Sorry, but that's really offensive. WE are the worst drivers in the mountains, not those Germans.

Or did you just get your driver's licence? And you spent a (Sun-)day driving over alps in a car? Really? How 60-ies is that?

It was rarity to see motor homes driving passes in the past but nowadays they can be seen everywhere. Even rarer were motor homes with Swiss numbers. Yesterday, thatís all we saw. VD and ZH numbers were the most prevalent.

By the way, Iíve been doing pass drives for over 30 years and Iím still not 60.

Re: Rant: Motor Homes slowing down traffic

I wouldn't have any problem with slow movers, be it bikers, motor homes, anybody driving VW microbus from 60s, whatever. If they would exercise just a slight bit of respect and consideration for others on the road... which is often not the case.

What I mean - take those motor homes for example - more often than not, some old guy driving it uphill 20kmh on road that doesn't allow safe overtaking and motor home barely fits on the road, having queue of 50 other cars behind him. Would he stop at some convenient safe spot and let the rest overtake him? Of course not, he couldn't give a nanofraction of a f__k about anybody else on the road.

Just to be clear, I've seen it happen - maybe 10x in my whole life (most often with truck/big industrial vehicles, pro drivers seem to be generally nicer).

It could be same person behind normal car, still driving annoyingly slow for no good reason but at least not as extremely slow due to crappy vehicle chosen to move around a road not built for those.

Personality is the issue, motor homes just highlight it more.
