Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

So basically according to the website for the Christmas markets, there will be no Christmas market in any form in Zurich this year.Has anyone seen any news at all regarding Christmas and any activities?

Surely something could be done? It's not like we haven't had to work around Covid all year? Surely with reduced stalls and seating areas something could be worked out?

Disappointed is not the word!

Re: Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

Darcy, honestly - speaking from this area of the country and waiting for today's fed update from Berset, closing Xmas markets looks logical. Things are operational because the cantons managed to not spread the infection intercantonally. Helicopters are busy with transfer patients because some areas have low CV numbers. If markets open, that's when people from other cantons come..and CV numbers rise. Non-essential shops are closed in GE (the most affected area in Europe now), I can imagine people travel for Xmas shopping all over.

There is an anti-dote we've been doing since last March, just in case this Xmas is low-key, we've had so many xmas movies on, baked cookies already...even mulled wine with friends. Now I can dream of next year summer hols.

Re: Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

Montreux plans to do something alternative to it's traditional market. Only roofs, no walls, everyone seated and wearing a mask. Not sure if this is still happening or cancelled too.

I do understand the need for cancellation,I do think however that they knew there would be a second wave and had time to put some kind of celebration in place.
The lack of Christmas in Zurich will definitely lower cases of Covid though. It's going to be empty.I imagine the mask wearing in stores is going to be a real problem for alot of people.
I just hope we have the vaccine here really soon and a way out of this mess.

Empty is what is needed. Not have people breathing at eachother, basically. I can't see how it can be avoided in events where people get merry. Prague had really high incidence because they let big farmer's markets open early fall, I think, aside of imports from holidays abroad. A month after the lockdown started Prague has the lowest numbers in the country but it is events like these that start that massive or even undetected silent spread. That's why we got schools open here (well at least till we know more today) but events where there is a risk for older generation are cancelled. So theaters, markets...etc. here. But the ice-ring was open the other day , either fluke or there are no grannies on skates expected (I did skate with them last year, though).

At the bauschänzli there is something like a christmas island:

But it is not cheap to have a menu there.

There is a van selling gluhwein at Stadelhofen, that maybe the extent of my Christmas celebrations this year.
Thanks for the link but I find the Christmas offerings in hotels pricey and somewhat soulless, seriously lacking in atmosphere.

Re: Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

How many local people actually visit the Christmas markets?

I think mainly they're for visitors, which is the last thing we need lots of just now.

And many of the stallholders are also from abroad, and travel around Europe going to these markets (I've seen the same stall in Rapperswil, Zurich and Edinburgh). Also not ideal.

I love Xmas markets too and this year is the first year we are back after 10 yrs so it is a pity most are cancelled. I know grumpy normally has some Xmas events/ goodies at the Viadukt. I am sure he will update with something soon.

Speaking as one who has had Xmas market stalls in the past and I have contact with a lot of people/companies who were hoping to have huts again this year, the problem is if there was less huts and less seating (and lets face it, a lot less visitors as many people would be too worried about visiting a crowded market) it just would not be financially viable to rent and man the huts. Even if the organisors reduced the rent by 50%, it still would not make sense.

Most people I know in the trade were already saying some months ago that they had decided to cancel this year, I imagine that that, compared with worries about possible lockdowns, made it an easy decision to make.

I agree! But for some people it is an uncomfortable experience. It's just necessary right now, hopefully this time next year we won't need them or the government decides they aren't working, who knows where we will be 12 months or even 6 months down the line?

Thanks S.O. This year we're having to be very careful with numbers. The 2 Saturdays before the 25th are my busiest days of the year. This December we're looking at having a few tents on the front terrace of the Markthalle so customers feel a bit more comfortable about queuing to taste Port and Stilton etc. As soon as I get confirmation I'll post some events here.

Re: Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

I also think they handled the first wave well, we didn't enjoy a christmas market in the middle of it. Since the first wave it has gone downhill and the second wave in Switzerland is one of the worst in the world because they reacted far too little and far too late.

Having christmas markets in the midst of this second wave would certainly not be handling it well. It's exactly as you say, too many people are complacent and selfish with the recommendations. So, I believe, having christmas markets would be utterly utterly insane as you yourself admit 'there are still plenty of folk who adamantly refuse to put a mask on.' Can you imagine everyone meeting up, milling about, drinking, eating, bumping into each other? Reduced stalls and chairs aren't going to prevent it from becoming an ideal super-spreader event.

I'm also disappointed but I would be far more horrified if the christmas markets were not cancelled.

Re: Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

Unless you are an owner of a Christmas stall and will lose business (I feel for every business owner or people who have lost jobs during COVID times), I don't understand the whining of regular people, that this year's Christmas markets will be cancelled or that they can't do this or that.

The reason of cancellation is so very simple. I LOVE Christmas markets - but I can live without it this year, considering what is going on. My sister on the other side of the globe who is single and always spends Christmas alone was supposed to spend Christmas with us here. I was really looking forward to taking her to the Christmas markets because she would absolutely love it. Obviously, the trip needed to be cancelled and she is better off staying where she is, as it is MUCH safer there (Japan). Of course she and I are really disappointed she cannot come anymore and she will be alone again. But - it is what it is, and neither of us are going whine about it.

The West whines too much about the small stuff . incl. wearing masks. In Japan small kids wear masks too without any issues. Maybe drop the "me me me" culture a bit, and be respectful, considerate to each other, and the cases will go down much faster. And then - you can have all the luxury and pleasures back that people oh so long for.

Instead of complaining about no Christmas markets, or lack of Christmas ambience, be grateful you are healthy and appreciate what you DO have. My sister - who lives in a tiny apartment (but considered spacious for Tokyo) has not had a Christmas tree in more than 2 decades due to lack of space. But she is going to decorate her space as Chrismassy as possible with few real candles (you never know when an earthquake hits, so it's unsafe to light many candles) and many fake but almost-real-looking ones, and we will do a facetime session, so she doesn't have to eat Christmas dinner alone.

It is all up to us what we make out of an unusual situation.

Re: Christmas markets cancelled Zurich

The plan in Baselstadt was to have a scaled down Christmas market up at Munsterplatz with Swiss traders only. It was going to be done in such a way there would be an entry gate and only a certain number of people would be allowed in, the stalls would be spaced out. It was looking positive and then it was suddenly cancelled the week before last.

We do have a ferris wheel up there until January, it's normally from Germany but this year they brought one from Interlaken. The lighted arches will also be in the city centre from end November as it was felt people out and about should have something cheerful to lift their spirits during Advent.

Edinburgh has a huge Christmas market every year, this year it's going online.

We just have to accept this has been a very strange and difficult year for everyone both at home and abroad, so there's no point in complaining about it. I'm just grateful our family both in Scotland are safe, as are friends of ours based in Spain. I'm also grateful my husband still has a job as he is classed as a key worker in his organisation.

My worst ever Christmas was back in 2006 when I was having cancer treatment which made me very ill, bald and tired, so I'm thankful for every Christmas I live to see.
