| | Church bell
Hear the church bell, sounding every hours it’s a
Pain in the ass !!!
It’s not about religion, it’s about the fact the world changed... it’s not everyone who works from 08:00 to 17:00...

But after 16 years of living in my affordable yet great apartment in Zurich Oberstrasse - quite near a church who’s bells resound every 15 mins day and night, I did get used to it pretty quickly. In fact, they have become pretty comforting - and don’t I need a clock anymore.
For those nights when you know in advance that you won’t sleep, I can recommend a good brand of ear-plugs.

It’s quite simple, stop it between 21:00 to 08:00am .... I’m awake already because the church wakes up everyone at 06:00 ...
It doesn’t make any sense it...

It doesn’t make any sense it... | | | | | So you want to change a centuries-long tradition of the country you've moved to, because you don't like it?
Personally, I love it! I live across the road from a church and appreciate the quarter-hourly bells. I've lived here so long I only consciously notice them when I concentrate, and they don't interfere with my sleep at all.

Same here. It doesn‘t disturb me at night, was much more disturbed in Indonesia being woken up very early by the morning prayers coming from a mosque (on loudspeakers).

@ OP - you could move to the countryside to get away from the pesky bell noise - but then you’d probably moan about the smells, the sounds of the Cockerel crowing and the noise the bells make around the cows necks. On second thoughts please stay where you are, suck it up & invest in some ear plugs.

I lived in a Swiss Star apartment for a few weeks when I first got here which was about 50m away from the church. The first week it drove me nuts even through my earplugs but the second week I didn't really notice it at night and I'm a light sleeper.
You do notice it Sunday morning when they go into 'bell wars' between all the local churches for 15 mins or so though. | This user would like to thank Spaceghost for this useful post: | |

The Migros sells some great earplugs, they are often just next to the condoms.

It doesn’t make any sense it... | | | | | If only was that simple. I guess they'd have to organise a local referendum first...and the vast majority would still vote for maintaining the status quo.
Just a piece of advice: if you really can't adjust to the noise and don't want to rely on earplugs (understandable imo), better start planning carefully your move...now. I wouldn't wait for everyone else around me to change their ways, I'd find a solution that fits me.
But you should have known that once you moved here it's you who has to adapt, not the other way around. Good luck.

I have to put on ear defenders and/or close the doors and windows when I'm in my apartment and the bells ring but fortunately they don't ring through the night. When they go at aound 5pm that's actually not too bad because it's just before the time the neighbour gets home from work and starts chain smoking but I need to reach the door before the mains bells chime in.
They don't have to be so damn loud! I sometimse think to connect my own alarm clock to a fog horn on the balcony. No-one else is allowed to make such loud noise. No vacuuming on a Sunday but 10 minutes of deafening bell ringing is ok. The muslims and buddhists aren't allowed to have such a call to prayer. I find it an oppressive Christian action. "We're Christian here and you better know it, every day".

Unfortunately when I rented this apartment I thought that everything was perfect (their bells weren’t working at that time and just got fixed last week).
I don’t care about that religion as I said before, as long you wake up at 05:00am because you just wanna keep a tradition. There’s traditions that are no longer makes sense...
Anyway... before someone got offended and become a troll, I’m done with this thread.
Salut
