Church bell

Hear the church bell, sounding every hours itís a
Pain in the ass !!!

Itís not about religion, itís about the fact the world changed... itís not everyone who works from 08:00 to 17:00...

You could always move to a flat father away from the bells. Welcome to Switzerland.

Well, I used to think that too. But after 16 years of living in my affordable yet great apartment in Zurich Oberstrasse - quite near a church whoís bells resound every 15 mins day and night, I did get used to it pretty quickly. In fact, they have become pretty comforting - and donít I need a clock anymore.

For those nights when you know in advance that you wonít sleep, I can recommend a good brand of ear-plugs.

Or better visit the area several times over a few days to really get the feel of the area,

So you want to change a centuries-long tradition of the country you've moved to, because you don't like it?

Personally, I love it! I live across the road from a church and appreciate the quarter-hourly bells. I've lived here so long I only consciously notice them when I concentrate, and they don't interfere with my sleep at all.

I'm not sure people who work nights would agree with you

If only was that simple. I guess they'd have to organise a local referendum first...and the vast majority would still vote for maintaining the status quo.

Just a piece of advice: if you really can't adjust to the noise and don't want to rely on earplugs (understandable imo), better start planning carefully your move...now. I wouldn't wait for everyone else around me to change their ways, I'd find a solution that fits me.

But you should have known that once you moved here it's you who has to adapt, not the other way around. Good luck.

Your times don't match normal standards, but the principle is reasonable.

Many of the bells in our area seem to follow the normal quiet times rules - first ring at 07:00 and last ring at 22:00.

Can you please film yourself when you go to the Gemeinde to make your complaint? Or rather, the response of the staff there? We could all do with some cheering up.

Teasing aside, regularly occurring noise is one of those things that the mind can deal with if you are of otherwise reasonably sound mind. If you are already struggling with your mental health, it will become the lightning rod of your problems.

I live in the flight path of Zurich airport but sleep with the window open most of the time. The planes don't bother me but then I chose for them not to bother me. Therefore, my brain does not listen out for the sound. If I HAD chosen to have them bother me, I would not only hear the planes more, but also start evaluating any engine noise for "is that another freaking plane?!". The mind is a funny thing...

Unpredictable, acute noise is a different matter, especially if it's noises that are usually connected to someone being in distress and prompt an evolutionary response that turns even the most chill homo sapiens into a cave person again.

Re: Church bell

Move to a modern and well-insulated flat. Newer walls and windows make the job too damned fine. Sometimes I open a bit the window to listen something from outside, otherwise I just listen to the fridge and dishwasher.
