Complaint from above neighbor. Please HELP!

Hi guys,

I just got some complaint from Neighbour and I would like to ask you that whether might I wrong or she was too serious.

At 12.15 am, in the WC, when you need to turn on the light, the Luftung will be also automatic on. And at the time, I need to use the room, the Luftung was on and made neighbor who is living above my apartment annoying. She told me that from 10pm on, there will be no any noise. I know that but I have no idea when using WC without turning on the light? From now on, it means I should not use WC after 10pm. Maybe the quality of avoiding the noise of the apartment is not so good ( I would say bad ). So I would like to ask you that whether might I wrong or she was too serious.

Is there anyone who experienced the same situation. Thank you if you could give me some good advice.

Have a nice day

Best regards,

Neither you nor your neighbor are at fault. Tell the landlord to install two different buttons. It's ridiculous that no one has done a thing about this until now.

You might ask your neighbour, how she solves this conundrum; nicely, not in a passive-aggressive way. If she doesn't know, how to do this, then let the landlord deal with it.

It's not ridiculous. In the U.K, for example, building regulations state that a bathroom without a window needs to have an extractor fan that turns on when the light is turned on.

Not sure about the law here.

The only thing ridiculous in the OPs post is the attitude of their neighbour.

The neighbour is incorrect about there being no allowance for noise. Limited noise of course is allowed.

It's ridiculous that it's the same button, Tom. That's the crux of the problem.

I disagree, itís very standard here. If thereís no window in a wc then ventilation is also normal.

I would say to the neighbour quite politely that there is nothingy you can do about it.if she wants to complain to the Verwaltung let her. Let them explain to you that you canít use the wc after 10pm which of course they canít and wonít.

OP, do not let this worry you. Itís an unreasonable neighbour trying to intimidate you with bs. And donít hesitate to use the loo during the night.

That's actually the point. It needs to be the same button - so it turns on automatically every time the light is turned on without additional user input.

I believe that if there is no window or other form of ventilation in the toilet or bathroom that the ventilator has to be linked to the light switch.
It would be too easy to just turn in the light every time and never ventilate the room at all otherwise.

Let her complain to the regie that you use the WC after 10pm, see if they react.

Best regards,
If you don't want an easy life then just tell her that turning on the light to go to the toilet is unavoidable.

If you want an easy life then you can buy battery-powered LED lights that stick on to the wall that you can use for night time toilet visits. They are bright enough to do the job (I have one in my bathroom so I don't blind myself into wakefulness at night) and it will shut her up https://www.amazon.de/s?k=led+light+...ref=nb_sb_noss

You can buy them in various Swiss DIY stores like Jumbo, Landi, Migros Do It etc.

Re: Complaint from above neighbor. Please HELP!

If you want to be helpful to your neighbour, you could always wear a head torch or similar when you use the toilet at night, or if you live alone leave the door open with the light on in the next room.

Separate buttons can also be used and the ventilation button can be outfitted with a timer. I have this in my house.

If the ventilation causes a noise problem, then there needs to be an adjustment since there's obviously a construction error. It's easy for landlords to ignore these problems when they don't live in the flat. Both the tenant and the neighbour should complain to the landlord.

Re: Complaint from above neighbor. Please HELP!

Quite simply, you must make your nocturnal bathroom visits like this:

And, as is befitting of the times, use a pail for your business and upon completion, hurl it out of an open window into the streets below before retiring back to your bed.

Or just tell the neighbour to f**k off.

Regulations change, people learn.

For example, the Swiss habit of airing your house, which gets described here with much regularity, and involved opening all the windows for twenty minutes or so, whilst being effective, is incredibly wasteful of energy and probably accounts for 30% of a day's heating energy requirements.

More modern, minergie houses have better solutions.

That's probably the crux of the problem - get the fan fixed. It may have worn bearings or not be fixed securely to the wall.

It is convenient, other wise you have to press two buttons. Also after 10pm or at 3am or what ever other time you take a dump or a piss which is absolutely perfectly fine.

If the upstairs fellow does not like that other human beings live in the same building, doing perfectly fine human stuff such as taking a dump, piss he either has to move to a Zoo, commercial property with a single apartment, or to his very own house.

Even taking a quick shower after 10pm is o.k. if it is unavoidable because one works shifts or just had some steamy sex (which is also allowed after 10pm):

As ever, it must be something where the rules are cantonal-dependent. Neither our main bathroom nor the little WC have windows. Both have fans, but with a separate switch to the light. We prefer it that way, because it's less electricity and less wear and tear on the fan. We only need the fan during and after showers or baths.

20 minutes is way too long and not needed in winter. 5 minutes during the cold times is more than enough as the absolute humidity of cold air from the outside is so much lower (100% relative humidity @ 0įC is less than 30% relative humidity at 20įC).

Do it too much and do long and you will mummify your self. And it is not only done in Switzerland but Germany as well. The biggest waste of energy and risk of mildew are tilted windows.

If I were the OP I would contact the landlord and explain that the neighbour had complained about the noise of the fan at night and ask them to come and check it out in case there was a technical problem with it.

Sorry to disappoint you but there are a thousand better ways to save energy than worrying about the energy usage from a bathroom fan.

If you used it for two hours a day, it's only going to cost you approx. 1.20CHF per year. So that could be an increase of a whopping 0.60CHF from just using it when you showered.

Are all your lamps LED? Changing just one bulb from filament to LED could save you around 20 CHF if you used it for four hours a day.

Best regards,
Could you not perhaps just use the light from the hallway... presumably you know where your bits are located. If not just use a night light, you can buy them in any baby shop or online. Just plug it into the razor outlet.

Itís easily solved and certainly not something to go to war with the neighbors over, although some seem to think otherwise for some reason.
