Re: Acer + InterDiscount = No Respect & No Consumer Rights! Help, please!

The brand Acer reminds me of when I was at a computer show looking for sources for a new laptop supplier and was effectively told to push off from the Acer stand. I vowed never to buy or recommend Acer from that point and we gave the contract for laptops to Compaq.

It'll mostly be a heat or contacts issue with the laptop. Sucks in dust, dust stays.

You do make an awful lot of use of the landlady's laptop - is she blaming you, perhaps?

I frankly doubt a PC will freeze because of the internal cooling fan.
If it is the CPU fan it will!!!

What model number is it? Do you have the specs on it? CPU, RAM, HDD, GFX.

Your thread has intrigued me.

And for the other people who hate their ACER's and wish them to go away or want to sell them on, email my company (no PM's) with the details of them. Your headache may become mine!

Re: Acer + InterDiscount = No Respect & No Consumer Rights! Help, please!

Sorry, I don't know the model number.
All I know is that it's one year old or bit more, has 1.5GB of RAM, about 160GB of HDD, Intel Pentium 4 Processor (dual-core), NVidia video card (if I am not mistaken 7300Le)... I think I didn't miss anything..

Particularly, I would be happy to get any advice on how we should proceed from the point of law, what rights we have and how much can we ask from them.
To repeat my previous post in case you missed it:

hi,

Here's a small problem that I've encountered. My landlady brought an ACER PC about a year ago from InterDiscount and after some time the PC began freezing. So, since she had her service guarantee prolonged for another year, we took the PC directly to Zurich (from Geneva), where the ACER's Service office is located. The EURO 2008 was just to begin, we've been promised that we'd get our PC in less than 2 weeks, since there was no work to do for them.
We'll we received our PC only after 5 weeks, somewhere on July 10.

Few things need to be mentioned:
First, the officials at the ACER Service were very disrespectful with us, they didn't reply to our emails, they sent us the communication in God knows how many languages, they changed their minds as often as the winds changes its direction, they didn't respond to our calls (though they responded if we called from another phone number), they lied many times that they have begun solving the problem, but each time they were telling us otherwise, etc. Finally, they sent our PC to another address and put all the blame on DHL (while DHL had not done anything wrong!) for this and the very long-awaited result was that > they didn't do anything, they simply restored the operating system, but didn't resolve the problem. Ahh, the something to add > it was us who were trying to explain them what is the problem, since they either didn't want to do their job or they they simply didn't have any idea about computers (I am sure that all their technicians need to reed "PC for Dummies: The Basics"!!!). On top of all, they were trying to make us pay 160CHF for nothing (as I told you before, they were changing their mind every time they sent their letter in different languages)

The story goes on! So we received the PC after 5 weeks, no change, the same problem persists.
Ok, now we took it directly to the InterDiscount so that it’s them who have to solve the problem. We received our PC yesterday. This time they didn’t change the operating system (originally the PC came with Wind XP, later I put Wind Vista), but they did something with the PC, since I found out that they restored a partition (PQSERVICE) which comes with all ACER products (it’s a partition for the restoration of the PC). Ahh, I also forgot to tell you, the first time we got no report of the problem! But this time they decided to enclose a report in German (though we asked them before to communicate either in French or English, but not in other languages!!!!) which contained one phrase in English > “No problem found
Ok, now, we are completely tired of all this disrespect and “service”, if one may still call it a service!!! We lost all summer waiting for our PC, it’s too much I think! Now, I am trying to help my landlady to find another solution for her problem (she’s old and very lazy person, so basically it was me who urged her to do all these things).
Anyway, my question after this too long info is what are the rights of consumers in Switzerland (particularly in Geneva)???
Secondly, do they have a “consumer’s union” or any kind of an organization that might deal with this problem? Actually, we are already thinking of returning the PC, if it’s possible. We just want our money back!
Sorry for this long letter! I am asking you for any advice or recommendation!
THANKS!
R.
I thught thought I would say that ACER PCs are junk. That they work at all for a few seconds is nothing short of a miracle. If you actually want a PC that works then get yourself a Mac.

I am sure this can be stated for almost any model depending on user experiences. It all depends on how they are used, just like anything we buy.

And I wouldn't start the pc vs mac thread here again...
(P.S., are you collecting red strikes thinking they are actually green?)

When the PC freezes, is there any problem with display? If yes and the GPU is of the nVidia G84 or G86 series, you might want to check this google search. It seems nVidia is having a problem now.

Re: Acer + InterDiscount = No Respect & No Consumer Rights! Help, please!

A few nights ago, OH bought me one of these Acer mini laptop things with a detachable keyboard, so you you can use the screen as a tablet if you want.

She brought it home, I went through the setup and all, but afterwards the internet was not working. I called Acer support, got walked through on how to reset and reinstall the operating system, waited a few hours, and still nothing. I called a few more times and got walked through the same process, which changes nothing. 6 hours spent trying to get this stupid thing to work so far. I called Interdiscunt, and they said I could take it back. I took it to the store, and they tell me there is nothing they can do but send it in for repair, which will take 3-4 weeks minimum.

Acer support told me on the phone that I could exchange it within 2 weeks of purchase for a new unit. Interdiscunt says no, that warranty has nothing to do with them. Does anybody have any experience with this? IMO the 2 week return must be part of the agreement that a reseller signs with Acer, and that Interdiscunt is trying to sidestep this obligation.

Now i'm in a situation where I need a basic laptop to get work done. I don't want to buy another laptop, because I don't want 2 of them. But I can't wait a month before doing what I have to do...

I'm tempted to send Interdiscunt a bill for the time Ive spent trying to get this thing to work.

Re: Acer + InterDiscount = No Respect & No Consumer Rights! Help, please!

Take a look through this FAQ on consumer rights. Generally speaking, you have a right to replace defective goods, but unfortunately the seller's T&C can override your basic rights

Not sure if a shop needs to make you aware of T&C (I've never seen them in a bricks and mortar shop), or you are expected to ask before buying. Anyway, it's worth mentioning the law to see if they back down.

I now only buy stuff from Interdiscount if the price is really good, and I don't mind either a)throwing it away or b)fixing it myself.

Actually, I haven't bought anything since the last time I had them fix a colour laser which had broken within the mfr warranty period AND had been purchased with an extended warranty from Interdiscount. They wanted to charge me for a full CYMK toner set "So they could test it" AND they wanted 140CHF up front to just look at the thing!
