targeted marketing

Hello all
I am pissed off by a situation recently happened.

Usually in my mailbox lands plenty of publicity on paper. However, these are normally either flyers or letters addressed like this "An die Einwohner blablabla..."

Last week i have received a directly addressed letter from a company which is promoting a controversial real-estate project(a project which triggered a lot of discussions amongst inhabitants of the municipality where i live).

So, the company decided to send direct, targeted letters to all inhabitants, including me. The letter came with my name and my full address written on it, asking me to vote "Yes" for the project.

Apart of the fact that i dont have the right to vote(permit L), i was astonished to learn that my personal details could be used in such commercial activities.

I have asked the company how they get my details and they said(translation with Google Translate):
"The addresses in question can be purchased from specialized agencies in Switzerland."

Is this a normal practice here in Switzerland? Of course, back in my country companies are hunting for databases with personal details.

Thank you for any input,

Re: targeted marketing

You can easily find such information. I cyberstalked everybody on the street of the property I intended to buy before the purchase and obtained full details including name, date of birth, etc.

For your purpose they could have just done a mailshot to everybody on the street, but obviously wanted to add the name to personalise it and hopefully achieve a better result.

Re: targeted marketing

In the UK this kind of info is very easily available from the electoral roll.

None of that basic info is much use for fraud though - they can't get access to date of birth etc just name and address usually.

BTW: they sent the letter to each inhabitant -according to their answer.
So, if understand correctly this is a normal practice in Switzerland.

Re: targeted marketing

I had noticeably fewer misguided marketing attempt aimed at me after I registered on the Robinson List. Not 100% sure how it works but it does, so...

Re: targeted marketing

Indeed, however, i am not registered in the phone book.
I usually stay under the radar on the internet just because i am very careful with my online presence(old-fashion IT security).

Yes, but just the family name, not my whole name. However i cannot imagine a company going through the whole municipality to collect info from the mailboxes. That is like checking more than 10 000 mailboxes(--a rough estimation) which i find it insane.
