Front camera on COOP self-scanning devices

Probably it's only new for me, but does anybody know why do the self-scanning devices in COOP have front facing camera lately?
Normally I'm not paranoid, but cannot really imagine the reason. Did I give consent to any kind of data collection by using the device?

They're everywhere, although that does not mean they are activated: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article...system-cameras

Re: Front camera on COOP self-scanning devices

It doesn't work (yet). Before they will enable it, they will have to add this consent to Passabene's ToS, so will either have to opt in or stop using it (most likely - just a wild guess).
There were several articles about that lately, for example here: https://www.blick.ch/wirtschaft/neu-...d16546749.html

Yes, whatever you do with Passabene device is recorded and used as any other Supercard data: Die mit Passabene generierten Daten sind Teil der Daten des Supercard Teilnehmers und werden entsprechend bearbeitet und aufbewahrt (vgl. Ziff. 10.1 und 10.2).

The best way to fool a digital camera is to use Juggalo makeup, facial recognition uses the contrast values in your face and going juggalo confuses the system.

Re: Front camera on COOP self-scanning devices

With the Passabene app you can scan with your own phone. You’d have to give permission for their app to use your Camera.

Isn't it just a light/photosensitivity sensor for the screen brightness?

It pretty much looked like a proper camera lens to me. Wouldn't make much sense anyway, it's always the same light conditions in the shops

Re: Front camera on COOP self-scanning devices

Can someone post a photo?

And wouldn’t it be a receptor for the image bounced back from the laser? From the interweb thinie:

Quote:
Q. How the barcode scanner reads the barcode?
Ans- The barcode scanner basically uses sensors and a light source to recognise and measure the strength of the light bounced back by the white spaces inside the unique design of parallel bars. The light is detected via the help of a photodiode, which in return produces an electronic signal.
In fact at Coop the passebene app allows you to ‘scan’ using your phone’s camera.

Go ahead and put your gum on it.

New 5 MP Front-Facing Camera Supports More Advanced Apps

Enable a wide variety of image-based apps. For example, you can enable facial recognition to automatically identify the customer, eliminating the need to scan a loyalty card. And you can cost-effectively implement the latest locationing technology, VLC, which leverages your existing LED lighting infrastructure to track customers and workers.

Re: Front camera on COOP self-scanning devices

I don't really understand the concern - you're in a public place, using their device. You already logged in and gave them a bunch of information through the loyalty scheme which this is linked to.

Any capture of photos would be illegal until they change the T&C, and even if they do that then they would be covered by the usual rules on privacy and business need.

If you don't like it, or you're planning on doing something you shouldn't be doing in a Coop, just don't use the scanner or use your own phone.

The camera feed is fed to a TikTok account.

It shows short videos of the utter shock on customers' faces when they scan an item and see the price.
