so you can buy them pretty much anywhere. In the supermarkets they're often not on the shelves so you have to get them from the customer service counter.
Yep. Ours are orange, but they have them behind the Migros and Coop check-outs.

Not seriously worried, there was some thread about a "New VP" - perhaps they encourage fake GC supporters

Newly moved here from France, expat USA. Temporarily living in a apartment complex in Canton Vaud. Was shocked to notice that only “official” white plastic garbage bags are approved to be disposed of in public déchèterie ! Not available in local village. Used the usual black 60 L one yesterday. This morning went to the same dumpster saw that my black bag had been removed ( garbage and all) and placed next to the dumpster! I obviously threw it back in further behind the rest of the white “official” trash bags. Interesting to see if some Nazi-like oberfurher will dumpster dive. Any similar experiences?
Your cognitive abilities need working on. You threw it back in? Didn't work the first time round, did it. Why not strike a match on it?
We look forward to you reporting back on that.

Okay, who's reincarnation is Schaps?

Could have been me, but I'd have gone for Schnaps - anyway, I'm busy with very important football issues right now: Hopp GC etc.

OP, just in case you're not a troll:
garbage disposal is taken seriously around here. Know that this can and will be fined, in canton Vaud it's up to 500.- the first time and up to 1000.- thereafter, plus the procedural costs each time. Further, every time comes with 200.- procedural fixed cost on top.

My friends working at the commune say that a warning letter is the typical first reaction, "Oi, that's not how it's done, improve your ways or else.". But of course local practice may vary, and having pissed off everybody already won't help you either.

It will be interesting to see which applies to you, do report back.

You'll find that putting your bag outside the bin was a "warning".

The next step, if your garbage is back in the bin, is the garbage police will go through your garbage, find out your name/address and issue you a fine.

Seriously.

As Spinal is factual and Urs Max uncharacteristically nice in his original post, I thought I’d “adjust” it as

Love the title, it's so wrong. As others have said, expect to find a letter with a fine in your post box fairly soon. I seriously doubt that there isn't somewhere in the village that sells the official bags.

Don't bring your US/French mentality to Switzerland; instead learn what the rules are (they can be many and often surprise you) and abide by them. Unless you enjoy getting a lot of fines of course.

That's nothing. Once I went into the mountains to shoot a cow. You should have seen how the farmer got angry at me. Such a gestapo nazi. You might have thought it was his cow or something.

Ours are grey and sold in multiple places but you do have to ask for them as they are always kept behind the counter.

I’d be very surprised if the OP’s village shop doesn’t have them, I suspect they didn’t ask.

They’re off to a flying start in Switzerland, pissing off all the neighbours in the first couple of weeks is never a good idea.

If you dispose of trash in the wrong bag, or wrong trash in the right bag, you're taking your changes and might get a fine from the trash police. Not a joke, there's a trash police.
What do you mean with 'wrong trash in the right bag'?
I guess with first 'trash in the wrong bag' you meant regular mixed trash in non paid bags, but I cannot decipher what you meant by the second one.

Also, you are allowed to put whatever you want in paid bags, right?
I mean, it will just mean that you pay much more for your trash disposal.
Or you could really be fined if you don't recycle?

It might be an urban legend, but I was told when I moved here that you can't put recyclables such as soda cans and glass bottles in the regular rubbish or you'll get fined.

In terms of educating newcomers, how is it handled in other cantons or municipalities? In the two municipalities where I've been, both of them gave me a free trash bag and explained the system when I registered. Canton Bern if that makes any difference.

Really colourful lives you lead IMO the sticker system with any old bag works best

You obviously failed to bag the poor cow in the correct colour coded body bag - no wonder the bewildered farmer was irate

In Vaud you cannot put recyclables in the paid sack. Aluminum/Aluminium, glass, cardboard, paper, etc need to go to the déchetterie at, of course, your cost.

In La Côte you could use these guys, again at your cost http://ecotrisolutions.ch

I thought this thread could be interesting then I realized you were complaining about paying chf 2 for a bin bag and this was your basis for calling CH autocratic.

I think that is an urban legend - you pay your money and then put what you like in them (as long as it's normal household waste).

The recycling gets a big boost because it's free.

For me it's a great system - if I get stuff that's too messy or smelly to recycle, or for whatever reason I just can't be bothered, I figure I'm paying and it's not landfill but incineration with waste energy collection. I make a decent effort to recycle, because it's right and because it saves money, but also have very little stress or excessive guilt over it.
