..... but once a young German lass went silent for a few seconds then burst out laughing and thanked me for the entertainment.....
I had that too once. Same guy? He might just be in this job for moments with people like us.

I stopped completely taking calls from numbers I don't know. And my combox tells everybody in two languages to leave a message as I will never return their call should I not know their number. Works like a treat.
And I block all strange callers who did not leave a message for good.

Re: Argh - cold callers!

I have not yet got rid of the landline, but the ringers on all handsets are turned off. Mobile phones are set to silent as well. I often choose to just let calls go to voice mail to be dealt with later - if at all.

Anyone who has a legit reason to contact me already knows to text or mail rather than phone. Anyone who does not know that does not have a legit need to contact me and thus does not merit a timely response - or often any response.

Originally did it for the dog, as unexpected sounds can trigger a seizure. Kept it going for me, as life is measurably better now that the phone no longer demands my attention.

tl;dr - Don't engage. Just hang up. Better yet, don't even pick up in the first place.

Re: Argh - cold callers!

I don‘t have have a land-line since years - who has a land-line anymore?

I set my mobile settings to „mute unknown callers“. So anyone that’s not in my known contact list needs to leave a message. If they don’t leave a message after 2 calls then I just add them to my „blocked contacts“ list.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to see if my phone has that option.

Thanks again. I guess I just never noticed that option in my phone before (though I admit, I've never really fully explored all the "bells and whistles" on my phone).

We still have a landline. Sometimes it’s useful if you have do not disturb on your mobile. My husband’s brother had a cardiac emergency earlier this week and the hospital in NL called us around midnight on the Festnetz.

On the other hand, mostly it’s Microsoft calling. So it’s 50/50.

If an iPhone is set to silent at night, it will ring when the same number calls twice in 2 minutes...

True. But sometimes a caller doesn’t know this. So we keep the landline around.

Re: Argh - cold callers!

With the internet package we have, the land line is an extra fr1.90 a month. So why not keep it for less than 24fr a year?
