Funnily enough, I was just telling a colleague how this has been the best summer (for me) since I moved here But then again, I was more than happy with the weather in Seattle, so this is just a nice continuation of that.

I understand why others aren't happy about it, and my tomatoes are pathetic, but this is good for my soul.
Yeah, you know it’s ok. I take my vit D regularly, and it’s better for my elderly pup, who I think will make 17 in September. When it’s too hot in the summer I am sometimes depressed. I’ve given up on tomatoes anyways.

Just be thankful you are not participating in the Nyon triathlon today. Rain started around 0900, now a thunderstorm with a torrential downpour. I can see a bit of the cycling route and they are not happy campers.
Yeah, we got stuff ready to take to the recycling centre and were just about to load it all into the car just before 1pm when it started chucking it down. So now I'm semi-soaked. At least we've cleared most of the recycling stuff out of the way again.

Re: Worst summer ever?

From a personal comfort standpoint I have been happy. I'm one of those who melts when the thermometer hits 20 degrees.

However, the gardener in me is very sad.

I've lost all the tomatoes that are planted in the open to rot or fungus thanks to all this rain. Only those under my Tomatenhüsli, where I can control the water, have been spared. That's half my harvest gone.

The pear tree is bare - after flowering early due to a warm snap, we had a cold snap, lost most of the flowers, so no fruit.

The chilis are waaaaay behind. We need a blast of heat if they are going to ripen.

The rain and cold also took my usual battle against slugs up another notch. I've lost half my beans and sugar snap peas, despite nightly slug patrol. I even found one of of the little (insert expletive here) monsters climbing up towards my second floor balcony!

As usual, though, I am drowning in zucchini. Hot or cold, rainy or dry, nothing seems to impact zucchini. Come the apocalypse, at least I'll have zoodles.

This is me as well. Although I didn't lose my pears and the apple crop is the best one yet so far. Still, the tomatoes are sad to see. I ended up buying a little Quonset type greenhouse thing "for next year".

I also feel bad. Not at depression level, but it feels sad, a bit like living underground, and having had Covid in the past months doesn't help. It's not enjoyable to go outside and I don't feel safe to be inside with many people.
I feel like I wasted a good part of the last 18 months; I should have adapted more, but I haven't...

Also I'm sorry for the youngs, for them it must be harder than for me.

My garden lost 50% of its trees due to the storm of a few days ago. Now when I look out I only see square, tall buildings, instead of the previous green wall.
Luckily I did not suffer any material damage, other people have holes in balconies or in the roof...

But yes, I agree complaining is useless. Let's move on and keep hoping
Wow, that's rather a lot. I'm sorry to hear that.

Were you working from home? Are you still feeling ill or have you recovered enough to work again? If you're working, it is (still?) from home or do you have an office to go to?

Absolutely the worst - I also don't miss the extreme heat, but June and July were just absurd for rain.

That would get me down too! I feel with you.
Maybe plant a few trees before you lean back to hope. That's if it's your own garden and you're allowed to plant. After all, all this rain might make them grow quicker?

I've posted it somewhere else before: Swiss meteo reported that only 4 days in July entire Switzerland was dry. On all the other days it rained some place or the other!

As everybody talks about tomatoes: My yellow ones turn yellow, look pretty then immediately start to rot. It doesn't help picking them early and let them ripe inside, they rot. Basta.
To be honest, that's worse than not having any.

Yes same here - normally by now we're freezing and giving away loads, this year I think we've managed to find a handful of cherry tomatoes that didn't rot before ripening. No chance at all for the big ones.

Re: Worst summer ever?

Are the tomatoes rotting from the blossom end? Blossom-end rot is caused by too much water or irregular watering. Also, the night temps haven't helped set more fruit. They really need 16+. I don't expect much when I return to the Alps...I'll feel lucky if something survived the schnecken.

I've started to learn it, but in general it's not needed.
How is it not needed?

Everything works in Italian here, especially government offices.

Very few people speak English, especially among the 70k frontalieri.

Re: Worst summer ever?

The slugs really have been awful this summer. I have to tiptoe around them if I go out onto our terrace in the evening. I had the pleasure of stepping on one once in bare feet. That was fun.

Oh, I realize now that I wrote it quite badly - I did not have Covid myself, I meant that we all "had" the Covid thing and we could not socialize, and that is probably why we feel particularly robbed of the good weather right now.
Apologies for the bad writing.

Speaking of half empty / half full glasses, as someone pointed out, in recent years it's been either this or droughs, sometimes simultaneously. Lake Lugano and Lake Como overflew due to too much rain, while Sardinia and Greece are burning due to high temperatures and lack of water. I don't get it, everything seems so unbalanced, unpredictable and extreme.

I'm trying to be positive, stop planning for bike tours which I will not be able to make, and shift to indoor- or balcony- compatible DIY activities. I'm trying not to stay at the PC the whole rain time

Re: Worst summer ever?

Rufus slugs, those ugly orange-ish or rusty ones, eat plants. Be careful not to kill the leopard slugs (gray with blackish streaks)--they eat the other slugs and their eggs and otherwise only dine on dead organic material.

Edit: haha...this thread has become braided.

Yeah can't care less about those government minions, it's their job to understand me and provide acceptable services.

Sure few refused to speak on the phone, but few smart and reasonable people are out there, they help.

It's my 4th country, I learned the language of 2nd country to get the passport. Right now in my life I can't be bothered with more languages...really.

I'm lucky enough that my job is in English. Of course it's all job dependent. If I had a job that required Italian, I wouldn't have any other choice.

Also, I think you misunderstand my presence in Switzerland. I can't care less about integration and all this non-sense, I did when was young but now, forget about it. This country should be happy to have me.
