Yeah can't care less about those government minions, it's their job to understand me and provide acceptable services.
Actually, it is YOUR responsibility to speak the local language, NOT theirs to speak yours.

It's been the best summer ever. We can travel again. I don't notice the weather much, or, it is unlikely to spoil my happiness..

After 15 years here, I've come to realize that there is always going to be extended crappy weather at some point during the year. Sometime it's in spring, sometime the fall but mainly in late July-August. You just have to roll with it.

Are the tomatoes rotting from the blossom end? Blossom-end rot is caused by too much water or irregular watering.
Too much watering (rain) - the entire allotment looks like this:

I'm getting a couple of fruits off the vines, but it is pretty pathetic.

My sage died in the wet whilst we were away.

Now I've only got parsley, rosemary and thyme.

Not enough for a song....

Seeing how EF rates its happiness to have you, I have an idea what Switzerland would think.
This forum is great, I find it extremely helpful and very greatful to all the people who answered my questions. Same as britishexpacts forum, it's quite useful too.

But this is of course completely orthogonal to integration in Switzerland. In fact looking at number of people groaning and considering this is an English forum and British/Americans are the worst when it comes to integration as expacts makes me laugh. But I don't care much to be honest.

I understand where you're coming from, but I don't hear Vanini personnel speaking German to accommodate Swiss Germans, so I'm not 100% sure with this responsibility thing.

Re: Worst summer ever?

That's blight.

Had that for a few years back in the '90s, ended up using Bordeaux mix on them (and the potatoes) for a few years.

Yup, once blight's around, it takes a while to eradicate it, and Bordeaux mix is the ticket.

Re: Worst summer ever?

I suppose one's perception of the weather this summer is dependent upon where they're located exactly and what they usually like to do in the summer. My biggest complaint about the weather this summer is that we haven't been able to do much swimming. I'm just glad we didn't set up a big, new pool in the garden this year as we were originally hoping to, as we wouldn't have even been able to use it.

It feels like it's been raining almost non-stop since the beginning of May here. I will take that over a drought and long, nasty heat wave any day, though. I'm just thankful the flooding here wasn't any worse.

Ah yes, this spring in Ticino - we though we would escape Geneva for a prolonged weekend there I think in late April... well that was a bad decision. It was significantly colder and more rainy than in Geneva at the same time, and crappy weather all around. Ticino? No thank you for quite some time.

Also its so tiny that after 2 visits you either have to desperately go to remote valleys (often not possible in April/May with 1-year old) or keep going to same places and towns. I really hope there won't be borders closed next spring for fully vaccinated folks, west/south from Geneva its almost infinite places to marvel & discover and usually much closer too.

Well you have Como, Bellagio, Varena, Varese, Parlezzo in short driving distances.

Re: Worst summer ever?

That burst of summer was so nice earlier in June...then the hail tore apart all my seedlings, half the waterlilly leaves, and almost wiped out my sweet peas.

It's still soaked, but my terrace is certainly looking very clean from the repeated washing.

Pre-covid, I was booked to do two working-holiday trips to thailand in 2021 and 2022, and an extended travel plan to Australia.

Mixed attitude in our household - I prefer the heat, spouse prefers the cool...

I'm definitely gonna book a holiday soon... but there's always Ticino if you need a warm weekend... we went across the border for overnight trips to both Italy and Germany last month. I don't think the personal risk is any higher than being around town - same (or even tighter) precautions...
