Floods, fires and a rusting grill. Würst summer ever.

Guess that I slept through it, dry and sunny!

Plus, that seems to be only up north.

It's been raining on & off for the past 12-13 weeks. Last week I discussed with some elderly Swiss people that I know and they also confirmed that this summer has been the worst they have seen in their lives. Every morning it feels miserable to see grey skies. With covid cases going up, it's not even safe to go to another country to enjoy a few days of summer. I feel so trapped in this worst situation. Is anybody else feeling the same or am I the only person complaining so much?
This is my 20th summer in Switzerland, and while the last 5-6 years have actually been quite okay, 2021 is not so different from many of the earlier summers we had after moving here. Also recently read an article in NZZ or on meteoschweiz where they said this is fairly within the long-term average, it is just the culmination of rainfall within a few days that is rare.

The harsh truth is that Zurich is one of the least sunny places in Europe with less average sunshine than London, Amsterdam or Stockholm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ation#Europe)…. I catch myself spending all the time locked up inside looking at job postings and real estate in sunnier parts of the world.

People are pretty subjective about weather and hard facts sometimes tell a different story.

There are parts of the U.K. (considered a rainy place) that actually get less rainfall then Jerusalem.

Yeah can't care less about those government minions, it's their job to understand me and provide acceptable services.

Sure few refused to speak on the phone, but few smart and reasonable people are out there, they help.

It's my 4th country, I learned the language of 2nd country to get the passport. Right now in my life I can't be bothered with more languages...really.

I'm lucky enough that my job is in English. Of course it's all job dependent. If I had a job that required Italian, I wouldn't have any other choice.

Also, I think you misunderstand my presence in Switzerland. I can't care less about integration and all this non-sense, I did when was young but now, forget about it. This country should be happy to have me.
You are so right! For some reason indigenous rocks seem a lot smarter than a short while ago.
Geologists are still debating whether to link this event to recent excessive rainfall or the failure to prevent specific immigrants from leaking their entitlement over southern Switzerland…

Good luck when it comes to renewing your permit then, because that's reliant on you being able to speak the official language of the canton you live in unless you have the nationality of one of these countries - Belgium, Germany, Denmark, France, Liechtenstein, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal or Spain.

You forgot Somalia, Ethiopia, Afghanistan .....

I think the language only starts playing a role if you wanna upgrade the permit.

The fun factor comes when someone misses out on a 350K/year job in sunny, taxfree Monaco due to not speaking Italian. Having missed that chance by being the cool dude in Ticino for a decade or two.

No, it doesn't. If you don't speak a Swiss language come renewal time your B permit could be revoked; your C permit could be downgraded to a B.

Doesn't look like there is an exception based on nationalities you mentioned ?

https://www.fragomen.com/insights/al...-stricter-2020

Altho here says not required as per your post

https://www.santaferelo.com/en/mobil...-requirements/

Not really clear.

Those countries have separate agreements with Switzerland so no language requirement is needed by those countries' nationals.

And you were saying?

"Caution: These new requirements apply to both:

first time B-permit applications
B-permit extension applications" i.e. renewing your B permit.

How is it not needed?

Everything works in Italian here, especially government offices.

Very few people speak English, especially among the 70k frontalieri.

Tom
OK, I learnt Italian 45 years ago in high school, so it is still quite (very?) rusty.
I have found that I have been able to find people in the cantonal and local authorities that speak mainly German, sometimes English. In our comune, I have a choice of English or German, although I only ever resort to those languages when I am clearly struggling to make myself understood.

We have found in stores that more people speak English than French or German. If someone speaks another language that is... And actually, it appears that most of those that speak English are indeed Italians. The first foreign language they learn is English, so I have been told. They are not encumbered with another two national languages that need to fit in the curriculum somewhere.

Excluding the day when Grancia got flooded it has been fine actually
You're kidding me right? I only live 20K from Lugano, but the weather has been crap. I only need to add up the number of times that I cancelled a visit to the recycling plant because of rain to know that. Sure, they have been sunny days in between, but there has been a LOT of rain. Can't remember ever getting as many flood and storm warnings on the Swiss meteo app as we have this summer. Although maybe I could narrow it down to July. May and June weren't so bad.

Believe it or not, until the 90es English in Italian schools was just one of the possibilities, and French and German were more common. I studied French as first foreing language in the age 6 to 14, English only started at 12yo. I guess the reason was the presence of French and German minorities in Italy (Valle d'Aosta and Alto Adige, respectively).

But then English took over, as it is the language of business, science and internet, and now it's like you describe it.
