| | Re: Worst summer ever? | Quote: | | | | | actually, it appears that most of those that speak English are indeed Italians. The first foreign language they learn is English, so I have been told. They are not encumbered with another two national languages that need to fit in the curriculum somewhere. | | | | | Italians, yes, but they all speak it like crap. None of the Italians I work with dare speak English with me, nor most of my friends. Emails, sure.
Ticinese learn first French, then German, then English.

| | Re: Worst summer ever? | Quote: | | | | | Believe it or not, until the 90es English in Italian schools was just one of the possibilities, and French and German were more common. I studied French as first foreing language in the age 6 to 14, English only started at 12yo. I guess the reason was the presence of French and German minorities in Italy (Valle d'Aosta and Alto Adige, respectively).
But then English took over, as it is the language of business, science and internet, and now it's like you describe it. | | | | | I wouldn't be surprised if SAP software that Puntocitta runs to track people registrations is all in English

Tom | | | | | No. Between Ponte Tresa and Luino. It’s been worse elsewhere, but still relatively crappy here…

| | Re: Worst summer ever?
I recently started a similar thread on here, complaining about how weather has been terrible this summer. Thankfully, the following two weeks at least should be sunnier and warmer, with significantly less precipitation.
After having checked the statistics for the last 10 years I reached the conclusion that the Rhone valley in Valais and the canton of Geneva (but only Geneva, if you go further north towards Nyon, rainfall increases dramatically) have the most favorable weather conditions (most sunshine, least rainfall). I can already anticipate complaints about how Ticino is more sunnier (difference is marginal) and warmer (this is true, it is generally warmer year round), but it pays dearly for it in terms of overall precipitation which is far more abundant than the two aforementioned places.

Interesting fact here:
This summer - in the other emisphere - was the case that for some reason the months shifted by one, meaning that december seemed like november, january like december, and the real summer ended up being in february...
Might mean that our july could be our august and same thing goes for the upcoming months... | This user would like to thank martin959 for this useful post: | |

Everything works in Italian here, especially government offices.
Very few people speak English, especially among the 70k frontalieri.
Tom | | | | | I went to a cafe on mt Bre today, quite nice sunny day again.
Saw the following scene on top, Swiss German got fed up waiting for a waiter and started shouting in German about shitty service to one of the waiters. The waiter was very polite and tried to calm him down, but the manager appeared and very sharply cut the Swiss German off by speaking to him in Italian and saying to literally shut up and go fuсk yourself as I don't understand your language, its Ticino here.
Everything was pretty loud and many people were laughing.
The manager later served 2 glasses of fine Prosecco and was extremely friendly to me in English.
I love it here in Ticino.

I love it here in Ticino. | | | | | Swiss Germans behave appalling when they are outside Switzerland*
I was at one of those motorway toll booths the other day in Italy and although people tried to form orderly queues, the Swiss-Germans just drove up to the front and tried to force their way in.
I looked across at an elderly Italian man in the next queue and he just threw his arms in the air with a "What can we do with that behaviour?" look. We both then laughed.
I know Italians do this too but this was pissing everyone off.
Some of the road rage by the Swiss-Germans was pretty entertaining too and had everyone laughing. I wish I had videoed it.
Can I get a car sticker for my car that says "Only the car is Swiss-German and not the occupants?"
*caveat: unlike some British who are worse but no one pretends otherwise.

| | Re: Worst summer ever? | Quote: | | | | | Swiss Germans behave appalling when they are outside Switzerland* | | | | | I want to make a new thread about how Swiss are terrible at driving outside of Switzerland.
I've been frequent recently on A9/A1/A14 between Lugano/Tuscany/Misano and in 90% of times when I see a Swiss registered car, its being driven by a dick. They always drive either in fast or middle, never in slow lanes. Most of them are slow and even in fast lane they are afraid of overtaking middle lane vehicles. There are few fast fellas, obviously they don't care about speed limits when outside of CH, but inside they are 'model citizens'.
I've read many horror stories about how it is difficult to get a driving license in CH, but looks like training level is extremely poor.
I haven't seen Swiss jumping the queues yet, but they are extremely not happy when you overtake them on inside after politely hanging behind them for few mins. They will flash/beep you, but keep doing same speed in fast lane as middle one.

Tom | | | | | nah, 99% swiss.
forgot to mention, even when slow lane is free in 90% of cases in my experience a Swiss number-plated car will be driving in the middle.
