| | Worst summer ever?
It's been raining on & off for the past 12-13 weeks. Last week I discussed with some elderly Swiss people that I know and they also confirmed that this summer has been the worst they have seen in their lives. Every morning it feels miserable to see grey skies. With covid cases going up, it's not even safe to go to another country to enjoy a few days of summer. I feel so trapped in this worst situation. Is anybody else feeling the same or am I the only person complaining so much?

Blame the Jet Stream which is flowing far too far south. It also is bringing record heat to the eastern Mediterranean.
I feel it is safe to travel now and will be going to Greece for 2 weeks next month. I can't take it here anymore!

Personally, I prefer it like this rather than sweltering in 30C+ as usual. I'm not one for being outdoors much.

Might've been last year or the one before but a friend of mine shared with me a graphic from a newspaper in Basel that showed the mean summer temperatures with a color gradient (red being hot, blue cold) over the past 50 years across Switzerland. The remarkable thing was how it progressively got more & more red - this year, I can only assume we have regressed against that 50 year trend which is yet another unprecedented turn of events
Generally speaking, summer here is my favorite time to enjoy the country and when we travel abroad the least. I won't even comment on the catastrophe that has been our tomato crop

There was honestly no good reason this Summer for vaccinated (and/or otherwise able) people to not go somewhere for a couple of weeks to get some sun and relaxation.

Funny, just yesterday I thought this will "go down as the worst summer ever in my life" (I can not speak for eternity ) and found myself in a rotten mood for about 30 minutes. I don't do bad mood normally, so I hate it probably more than other people who seem to revel in it.
Complaining is absolutely useless though (as proven when everybody did over the past - did you say 13 weeks? Blimey!! I know why I didn't count). I was tempted the other day to take my weekly vitamin D3 portion daily though. And I make a point to appreciate every day I don't need to drag water outside to water the veggies. There is something good in anything to be found. Actually the trees and bushes in my garden have never been so lush, they seem to like this and I just love when it looks like in the jungle.
So, set your mind on other things is my input on the subject.

Not at depression level, but it feels sad, a bit like living underground, and having had Covid in the past months doesn't help. It's not enjoyable to go outside and I don't feel safe to be inside with many people.
I feel like I wasted a good part of the last 18 months; I should have adapted more, but I haven't...
Also I'm sorry for the youngs, for them it must be harder than for me. | Quote: | | | | | Actually the trees and bushes in my garden have never been so lush | | | | | My garden lost 50% of its trees due to the storm of a few days ago. Now when I look out I only see square, tall buildings, instead of the previous green wall.
Luckily I did not suffer any material damage, other people have holes in balconies or in the roof...
But yes, I agree complaining is useless. Let's move on and keep hoping | The following 3 users would like to thank venetian for this useful post:

We've been camping more times this year in Switzerland than other years and have had lovely weather (not just in Ticino).
In contrast, our garden had been devastated by hail - grape vines, kiwis, apples, raspberries etc have been stripped of leaves and of fruit.
Every other plant has been stripped of flowers, buds and leaves and a couple of trees have been stripped of bark.

My lemon trees are sad, my jalapeños are wimpy but my poblanos and serranos are doing really well. Also the weeds are vigorous.

Basically we've been all locked inside since 18months... now locked in even during summer time.... we're moving less, now no exposure to sunlight we'll be all down on VitD, our immunity weakened..
then, once the 2nd season of rain starts in Oct, all cold symptoms will be harder and it'll look like covii and once you've got cold , flu like symptoms they'll take you to the covid section of the hospital,.. and here we are for another year of locks up and 3rd and 4th jabbii

I think the temps here have been better than dealing with 30+ degree weather most days. But the persistent rain and gray is certainly annoying and depressing. I feel like we're being screwed out of a summer in many ways. But then I think back to the nasty heat wave and awful drought we had here a few summers ago, and I find myself feeling a bit more appreciative of the rain, I guess. That awful drought really freaked me out. I had never seen trees look so thirsty before.

I had a feeling there must be an explanation for it somewhere but had no idea what it was.

Just be thankful you are not participating in the Nyon triathlon today. Rain started around 0900, now a thunderstorm with a torrential downpour. I can see a bit of the cycling route and they are not happy campers.

No complaints here as our family in Greece are packed and ready to be evacuated, which will be today if things don't improve rapidly. One cousin has lost his home in Limni, Evia. Our niece's business is in Agio Stefanos which was evacuated yesterday, and my 92yr old mother-in-law is in Drosia which is the next to be evacuated.
All things considered, I'd happily send some of the Swiss weather over to them.

Tom | | | | | Yes, that is getting clearer and clearer. And not only because of the weather but there are loads of very nice little houses for rent at very decent prices in TI. I'm being bombarded with signs "you're fate is over the hill, south direction".
I even speak the bloody language, not on the level of my English but hey, otec lives there. | The following 2 users would like to thank curley for this useful post:

Funnily enough, I was just telling a colleague how this has been the best summer (for me) since I moved here But then again, I was more than happy with the weather in Seattle, so this is just a nice continuation of that.
I understand why others aren't happy about it, and my tomatoes are pathetic, but this is good for my soul.

Luckily Swiss German, Swiss French and Dutch come here for holidays so English acts as common denominator which is excellent. Rest can be done with deepl or google translate.
