Successful people generally wake up early. For example, Apple CEO Tim Cook wakes up at 4:30. Those delivery people may turn you into the new CEO of Apple.
I worked in a office where one girl used to start really early (and leave early).

I once had to go in early and found out her routine.
She got in early and then went across the road to the MacDonalds restaurant to get a take-out breakfast which she then spent the next hour eating at her desk.

I don't think she was more successful than others but she was certainly bigger.

My rental is in a residential area in the old city. Normally, there are also shops around but it seems also a producer which started to delivery goods at 4 AM each day starting sometimes even a bit earlier then 4AM.

Every morning at 4AM I am waking by transport vehicles coming and going, people loading stuff, sometimes speaking without any consideration. The fact that there is an old street with packed old buildings also seems to amplify these noises. It's not a continuous flow but there are like 4-5 transports which all come, load and go between 4AM-5.30AM and I am waken up every night so I started to be sleep deprived.

Which is the most efficient way to deal with it? Submitting a complaint to Police would be addressed? I mean I understand they want to optimize their commercial delivery times but even airplanes cannot fly at whatever hour they want during the night.
There are laws concerning when people must be quiet. If they breach the laws, go and have a chat with the local police.
This is perfectly normal.

I remember one time, when building was going on nearby, one of the workers started with their pneumatic drill at 6am. He didn't do it again. Check out your local laws and have chat with the police. Despite the attitude of some expats here, in Switzerland, disturbed nights are treated seriously.

Re: Commercial loadings at 4AM in residential area

Is this in the pedestrian zone? In this case deliveries are allowed only between 5 and 12. Outside of this area I believe it's 24h.

Given that it is a densely populated area and there are Swiss living there, I would guess that all the complaining to the authorities has already taken place to no avail.

I used to live on a busy intersection in Milan with inadequate windows and noise from:
  • Streetcar depot
  • Cars over cobblestones
  • Nightclub across the street (noisy patrons leaving at 3AM)
  • Little girl across from my bedroom crying every day nightmares around 4AM and worse, her histerical mother yelling: "Ma adesso baaaastaaaa!" Every single day for several years.

There was no-one I could have complained to with any hope of success and I chose not to add to the parent's stress, figuring they were punished enough.

My strategy was to go to bed later to be in deep sleep mode when most of the noise happened. I either didn't wake up or turning over went back to sleep.

When I'm on holidays and end up with a snorer in the room I use ear plugs. They work wonders but only when you insert them all the way. To achieve that you need to lubricate them with a bit of gel or spit. Obviously you disinfect them before re-inserting.

Re: Commercial loadings at 4AM in residential area

I feel your pain - I purposely chose a “quiet” area without realizing that the back entrance to a florist was across from us. (The door is unmarked) They also receive deliveries from 2 - 4 AM. The white noise or earplugs aren’t enough as you can actually feel those large doors when they are slammed and it jolts us awake.

I will survey an area in detail before I move next time ... I thought it would be illegal to allow this as you can’t make noise in your home past 10 PM, but I was wrong. Good luck!
