I'm not complaining about racism! I'm complaining about being stared at. Most of the time people that stare are Swiss. I merely pointed out that last night's incident was with 2 Yugoslavian women because I thought perhaps there were other reasons why non-'traditional' Swiss women would give me dirty looks in Switzerland. And I know how Yugoslavian women look like my best friend in primary school was Yugoslavian.
I just wonder how you know they were Yugoslavian and not Swiss? You're best friend was Yugoslavian so it makes you an expert on what yugoslavian people look like (which isn't a country anymore, btw)?

But when I get stared at I don't think people staring at me cause I'm white so I don't know why you would think people are staring at you because of whatever race/nationality you are.

I just fail to see the mental leap that goes from people staring at you to you making the assumption that they think you are a mail order bride. I went into this thread thinking that an incident had actually occurred not that people were looking at you.

People stare here, has nothing to do with you.

Re: We are not all mail-order brides!

I saw this really great program on RTL - they went through a phase of "we are so great that everybody wants to come to Germany" and interviewed some Russian dating agency madame.

"No no" she says in perfect German, "The Germans we get are very low quality, very low social class, I have beautiful women, they are educated many have PhD's" She shows an absolute stunner - whom they later film - "and German men with no education come here expecting peasant girls" Camera pans out, interviewer doesn't know what to say ... and the guy they accompanied "Well Olga was very nice but, er, I was expecting somebody a little more, er, hauslich"

Priceless ...

Re: We are not all mail-order brides!

I must admit that I stare at people. I try not to but I can't help but become somewhat enthralled and "people watch"... I have to also admit I look at mixed couples for the simple fact that its something more unusual and interesting. NOT because I'm sat there thinking she's a mail order bride (although there have been times where the couple has appeared such an odd couple with the fella being mid 40's balding and fat and the girl being young and stunning...)

I know it is rude to stare and I do try not to or at least be subtle BUT when I do I'm not sitting there thinking evil thoughts... unless I know the person and actually have evil thoughts about them

Is anyone else in a "mixed" relationship? Last night I was at a shopping centre with my Swiss partner and was given dirty looks by (actually they looked Yugoslavian?) two women for no apparent reason. Then there are stares, peoples' eyes literally popping out as you enter a restaurant and the people who stop talking as soon as you walk into a shop etc. Does this happen to anyone else? For the first few weeks I brushed it off and figured it was just my own projections or whatever, but its happened so often that it is becoming *slightly* annoying, which ruins the experience of my boyfriend and I going out etc.

Thanks people for letting me rant.
You should rant, and I slightly resent all of the people saying "you're going to have to deal with it" or "you're going to have to get used to it".
Screw that. We can assimilate all we can, but do not let things that are wring to you become an excusable way of life.
One of the first sentences that I understood in Swiss German was a friend of my husband's colleagues asking if I was a "souvenier-bride".
In any country, in any language, I am going to expect respect.

I regularly referred to myself as a "souvenir husband" back when I was still married. She was from here, I was from California, she meet me while on vacation in California.
(it was over a year and a half before we actually married though..)

Re: We are not all mail-order brides!

Chem, the reason why you don't and probably won't be able to experience the sensation of being stared at, is because you're caucasian.

Since you're a scientist, why not try a little experiment. Get a buddy who doesn't look remotely caucasian and walk with him into a restaurant looking all lovey dovey. Then do the same with a caucasian bloke.

Tally the stare counts and report back here.

You missed the point. I do get stared at, all the time in Zurich. I don't live there anymore but when I was living there I got used to it. I was recently back for a few days and again, it was a shock how much staring there was. Stay in Switzerland long enough and you'll stop noticing it too.

To assume that people are looking at you because of your nationality in a country where everyone stares is stupid.

And, btw, I've walked around Zurich with people who don't look remotely caucasian and didn't find the staring to be anymore than what normally occurs.

Re: We are not all mail-order brides!

While I feel for you, please don't talk about mail-order brides like there is something wrong with that. I happen to be a mail-order husband. I'll admit, at first I was just looking for a residence permit but after meeting my wife, it became true love. Sure, I'll miss her when she passes on (she just turned 97 this week) but I'll at least get to keep her cows to remind me of her.

Here is the ad that worked for me:

Name: Patxi
Ladies, I'm still available. I've been here for about 2 years. what gives? Don't ya wanna party with me? woohoo... They lowered my price twice already. I'm a red-hot special, come and get me. Location: xxxxxx, USA

There are others still available like me at: http://mailorderhusbands.net/order/

I'm also a "souvenir husband". I know a LOT of Swiss who marry foreigners. Many of my "souvenir husband" colleagues believe its because many of them can't stand other Swiss. Yes, we "souvenir husbands" sometimes get together over coffee to gossip.

Sometimes they stare like you owe them money or something.
This description cracks me up to no end. I know this look. It's some sort of bitter envy. We call these people "haters". Whenever I see it, I just laugh and I end up rubbing it in.

I think not. If the bride gets the chance of a better life in a nice country, and the husband gets to walk around with an attractive young woman on his arm, both benefit, and I can't see how it's anybody else's business.

Unless she brings her brothers over, too. And her cousins. And her grandparents...

But I don't think any of us is in a position to judge these people, or compare ourselves favourably with them, just because we were lucky enough to be born in a rich country, or were attractive enough to pull someone in the traditional manner.

Damn you for being doubly lucky.

But back to the thread, whenever I get stared at for walking 'round town with an attractive white women, it puts an extra zing into my swagger.
