Hi. I'm Indian married to a Scandinavian. Most of the people assume that my husbands Swiss and that I've married him for his Swiss passport. I've been asked a couple of times where I was imported from??? I'm sorry to say but the Swiss are really racist in this aspect (you cant blame them really-they're ignorant, zenophobic and not very well educated-so this kind of behaviour is to be expected).
Wow, thats awful. What stupid people.

Having lived in southern Germany, I would say it's more a German thing.
Agreed. The only time you see staring around here, it's a tourist from up north.

Swiss people in general stare at everybody, even other Swiss people. When they do this with me, I look them straight into their eyes, and they immediatly stop staring at me! You will see, that in general Swiss people cannot handle eye to eye contact for more then few seconds!
So, when they stare at you............just look them into their eyes!

I personally feel the staring is even worse in Southern Germany and more intrusive and offensive... to the point it's led to some heated moments in my time there. I was even left gobsmacked when some German walked specifically over to us to look at my wife.
Ya, those southern germans are so prejudiced - not like folks on EF at all...

Is anyone else in a "mixed" relationship? Last night I was at a shopping centre with my Swiss partner and was given dirty looks by (actually they looked Yugoslavian?) two women for no apparent reason. Then there are stares, peoples' eyes literally popping out as you enter a restaurant and the people who stop talking as soon as you walk into a shop etc. Does this happen to anyone else? For the first few weeks I brushed it off and figured it was just my own projections or whatever, but its happened so often that it is becoming *slightly* annoying, which ruins the experience of my boyfriend and I going out etc.

I know that mixed couples are not so common around Luzern, and people are bound to stare etc. Coming from multi-cultural Australia though, makes it SO weird for me to experience this. Anyone own a t-shirt printing business? Perhaps I could get a I AM NOT A MAIL-ORDER BRIDE top in German.

Thanks people for letting me rant.
They were staring because they thought you were hot. They were also thinking that they should never have cancelled their Asian mail order bride magazine subscription cause they missed such a nice offer rofl

Strange. I find quite the opposite. The "starers" are mostly older people, and they do not look away. I used to look away first, then look back and find them still staring. Now, instead of feeling defensive, I just look them in the eye and say gruezi. I think that's what it is. They expect the younger generation to greet and acknowledge them.

Re: We are not all mail-order brides!

Im enjoying the Challenge. Im Australian, with indigenous/white background and moving to geneva and working in the hearing aid business in a couple of weeks. I work with the Aged and know many are stubborn racist they can be here in Australia, so I can only imagine how they'll be in Switz.

I look forward to this challenge I especially look forward to reminding them, in the miost nicest of ways how, although I am of dark complection Im only living in Switz by choice and my white swiss girlfriend is only with me so she is probably only marrying me so her kids can be Australian and so she can trade in her swiss passport for an Aussie one, Its not true, I look forward to living in switz and she doesnt have to she can have both passports, however If I find myself in that position I look forward to reminding any SVP nationalists all the great things about australia and that whether your swiss or albanian you'll both have difficulty living in my country cause australia rocks. See how the the ass feels when the shoe is on the other foot.

I'm not complaining about racism! I'm complaining about being stared at. Most of the time people that stare are Swiss. I merely pointed out that last night's incident was with 2 Yugoslavian women because I thought perhaps there were other reasons why non-'traditional' Swiss women would give me dirty looks in Switzerland. And I know how Yugoslavian women look like my best friend in primary school was Yugoslavian.
and right away you assumed they were "yugo" because of what? i am " yugo" but when travelling abroad, people assume I am italian. in switzerland, nobody has ever referred to me as "yugo" and thought i was a local breed. i have "yugo" friends who have both dark and blonde hair, green and blue eyes. so be very careful, when you label people certain way based on their looks. it makes you look like the racist and uneducated!

I don't get stared at. Then again, I'm a short, unremarkable, pot-bellied white guy with cheap clothes and glasses.

To those who get stared at - there are worse things in life, surely...

Well thanks for educating me. Really there are Yugoslavians with blonde hair and blue eyes? I thought they were all squared-jawed with no necks and walk around going 'Was guckst du?'

I resent the fact that you insinuated that I used the word 'yugo'. No where in ANY of my posts did I ever use this word. The fact that you used it says more about your own insecurity/identity problem. The post was a rant I posted 2 years ago and it had NOTHING at all to do with labeling people as you implied and if you had bothered to read my other posts I have since a) apologized for offending anyone by using the world YUGOSLAVIAN and b) changed my attitude towards people staring at me.

And I know I am going to get groaned at for this but really I think integration would work so much better in CH if everyone just lighten the hell up and be able to laugh at themselves a bit. I never used the word 'Yugo' but I'm sure there are others that will and you should just get on with it mate. Growing up I have been called a chink, gook, nip, ching-chong-chang and what have you, and here in Switzerland I'm a half-cast drunken Aussie with a too laid-back attitude. And you know what? I DON'T CARE. I laugh at people who think that. I'm who I am and I am proud of it. And yes I have no problem saying that I am a CHING. For the people who are going to say I'm not PC, well I say screw political correctness, because my AUSSIE friends and I would've had an awful time growing up in Australia if we had to always concern ourselves with being so PC. I truly believe that political correctness, to a point, hinders integration. So you're a paki, a wog, a fag, a nip, a yugo, a mail order bride, so WHAT??

I know this is very different to my post 2 years ago, and for those who are going to give me crap for it well, what can I say, people grow.
