Re: Car Insurance Premium function of Nationality

The discriminatory policy based on nationality is rather silly and out-of-date. I know several people from Asia who were raised in other countries (US/UK), got their licences there, and never had an accident. They came to Switzerland and found that they are treated completely differently than an American or a Brit. It is as if the Swiss insurance companies are living in the middle ages when people rarely moved to other countries.

I agree with the OP about France. When I lived there, all French insurance companies based their premiums solely on my driving record, thankfully.

Re: Car Insurance Premium function of Nationality

It is true! I watched the guy at the insurance company fill my criteria on his computer . He accidently put my wrong nationality in at first. When he changed it correctly to UK the premium came down.

When i asked him why this was he said they have different risks for different nationalities. I was curious to find out more and asked him to fill in specific nationalities that I have found to be crazy drivers and yes they had higher premiums! I'm not mentioning which ones of our European neighbours they are!

To be honest though, although I have driven since I was 17 and never caused an accident, perhaps being a UK driver I should have a higher premium since we drive on a different side of the road to Switzerland. But on the other hand since it is the correct side of the road then maybe I should pay even lower premiums and everybody else should pay more including the Swiss!

Re: Car Insurance Premium function of Nationality

To me the biggest suprise was not that when the offering company changed my nationality from German to Hungarian - they thought I was German but I am Hungarian -, the rate jumped from 1500 to 1800, but that when I mentioned I want my brother and boyfriend as second and third driver to be included, who are also Hungarians but not living here, the rate jumped to 2400.

Ashish, I was wondering if you got this sorted out?

I was on the phone yesterday with my insurance co. about buying a car and told them that I have a Swiss licence and that I passed my drivers exam in the UK 18 years ago and switched to the Swiss one some 10 years ago.

Today, they received my documents and said that seeing as my nationality is not UK nor Swiss and non-EU, the insurance will cost Fr.600 more. Wtf?
Hopefully your reaction time whilst driving is a wee bit faster than the 2 years it's taken you to respond to the OP - regardless of nationality

Re: Car Insurance Premium function of Nationality

Don't care about thread resurrection, but I still find this freaking hilarious.

Same parameters for AXA and Basic vs Compact insurance for different countries:
- Switzerland - 864 & 1296 (alright)
- Germany - 892 & 1335 (ok just a tad bit more)
- Croatia - 1073 & 1595 (wthell mate)
- Cyprus - 934 & 1396 (asking for a friend)
- Italy - 934 & 1396

Of course I belong to the "highest risk" group, I don't know if this is sad or funny

Do it again with Albania, UK, Peru, and China.

Get offer from other companies. Then talk with the agents of the insurance companies directly and refer to the better offer from the other company.

Interestingly, at least one insurer charges French citizens lower premiums than Swiss citizens. Who would have known that the French are such safe drivers?

You've never driven in the Jura?

Most likely they have less claims. Doesn't mean they're safer!

I found that switching to a C-permit made my premiums drop. Car make and model is equally important. I'd assume BMW drivers pay the most ...

I now pay a schockingly low 340 CHF/year for Haftpflicht+Teilkasko with 0 CHF deductible.
