Swissair rip off

Was trying to cancel my trip to Sw on 2/28/09 and learn exactly why swisses are so rich. Not only tickets was nonrefundable, but generous option swissair gave me was to rebook it till 2/28/09 for another ticket plus difference in price - have to be higher- plus $250 rebooking fee. I mentioned that in US we call it a rip off,,,swisses probably don't have this expression in dialect.

Re: Swissair rip off

They don't call it a rip-off in their dialect maybe, but they don't call it Swissair either- the company went out of business in 2002!
no comment about "Sw"

How do you call it in your dialect when someone is a cheapskate and buys the cheapest possible tickets, then tries to blame the carrier for not being able to cancel or reschedule?

Re: Swissair rip off

Hi I am not sure what type of ticket you have purchased but I have worked for Swiss and the company has a class system.
Usually tickets in T, E or W class are non refundable and non changable.
Did you book it over the internet? how much did you pay for it?
If it was one of those "cheap economy fares" then most likely it will have to be one of the classes I have mentioned before.
This is not because they wana rip you off but because like almost everything you buy on means of transportation there are some specific rules. Of course if the same class is not available anymore they will ask for a price difference to be rebooked in a higher one. And the rebooking fee are usually charged for the administration coasts. The ticket has to be recalculated and re-inserted in the system, the old one needs to be voided in order that the whole accounting system is in line again. Theres a lot behind a rebooking eventho you might see it as a rip off. And as for Swiss being rich...well I am not sure about that. Airlines only start earning money when a ticket is over 500 CHF, under this price the airlines simply cover the coasts.
I hope the agent were at least nice and could explain to you the reason behind this.

So I guess there was nothing about refund/cancellation when you booked then

or fails to comprehend that the rebooking scenario including the penalty is standard industry practice -- it was clearly spelled out in the fare details -- have you raised your middle finger to Swiss as well?

Of course it was, but I couldn't imagine brutality of it. I thought it will be $150 cancellation fee or so.

Re: Swissair rip off

Swiss International have various fares. If you buy the cheapest then you have to fly on the date stated on the ticket. It is not a rip off at all!!
What are Swisses by the way?

Let me understand this you want sympathy in any dialect, when you booked a cheap non refundable ticket, then wanted a refund when you changed your plans.... I wouldn't hold your breath.

Wise up, the ticket was cheap, because of the restriction.

And brutal, what they slapped you into cancelling your plans?

Re: Swissair rip off

OP consistently claims to be "acting like an American." I grew up in San Francisco and while we do not like getting ripped off, we do not go around "raising the middle finger" when we don't get what we want nor are we surprised when we buy something with certain conditions and then get upset when we can't have our own rules applied. I regularly get Star Alliance to make exceptions, but I am a FF with them.

Stop painting "Americans" with your broad brush. It is actions from people like you who give us a poor reputation. From your use of the language, I might guess that you are a naturalized American. Nothing wrong with that, but it may be that you are taking more from your original culture and blending it with what you think Americans are supposed to be like. I like to think that Americans are a bit more diplomatic and not resorting to the middle finger salute all the time.
