Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

OK, folks, how about this:

William Ogburg and Dorothy Thomas put together a list in 1922 of
148 major scientific discoveries that were made by multiple people:
Newton and Leibniz both discovered calculus. Darwin and Wallace
both discovered evolution. Three different mathematicians 'invented'
decimal fractions. Oxygen was discovered by Priestly, in Wiltshire,
in 1774, and by Sheele, in Uppsala, a year earlier. Color photography
was invented at the same time by Charles Cros and Louis du Hauron.
Logarithms were invented by John Napier and Henry Briggs in Britain,
and by Joost Bürgi in Switzerland.

The list goes on and on.

Read Malcolm Gladwell's "In the Air" article in the May 12, 2008
New Yorker (also on his website).

This is similar to something that I touched on earlier. For many inventions there is somene who invented the concept or developed the principles, but is not generally recognised. Usually the person who gets the credit is the one who takes this further to a workable or commercial product.

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

I have worked for five service-providers / telco / carriers in Switzerland and I've never once heard from anyone that the internet was invented here. So, this can only be silly pub-talk. This sounds like a pointless post to get some kind of non-existent flame war going. So last century. I say pointless because you do not elaborate on who keeps stopping you in the street and telling you these things. As if. Rolls eyes.

How is it a lot of people in Switzerland believe the Internet was invented here?

I know Tim Berners-Lee was able to develop a hypertext protocol, but that is NOT the Internet. Even more so, he wasn't even the first to design a hypertext system. Bill Atkinson's Hypercard was using hypertext way before Tim. Anyone who had a Mac+ surely remembers Hypercard. To me, it only indicates Tim was a Mac user.

The Internet was commissioned by Advanced Research Projects Agency for the US Department of Defense for a distributed computer network able to withstand nuclear attacks. Where was Switzerland in that?

Please try to prove to me the swiss claim is more than just a möchtegern posture.

Oh this, it was just a futile attempt to increase interest for this sport among the Swiss. But is this habit inherently bad? Are the Kenyans wrong to feel a tie to Barack Obama?

I think that on this forum many expats have expressed that they identify themselves with several nationalities or no one.
The kenyans have every right to make some claim to Obama. His father was Kenyan and his Kenyan grandmother was invited to his inauguration. But the Swiss LOVE to hang on others coat tails. Now they even try to make some claim on Obama read this!:

Obama may have a Swiss ancestorUS presidential candidate Barack Obama may have Swiss roots, according to a French archivist.

Six generations back, in 1749, one of Obama's ancestors, named Christian Gutknecht, emigrated from the village of Bischwiller in Alsace in eastern France and settled in America.

But the Bischwiller archivist, Christian Gunther, says the Gutknecht parents probably came from canton Bern at the very beginning of the 18th century. They lived in a street specially built for immigrants from Zurich and Bern.

Christian, who was born in 1722, changed his name to Goodnight in America.

According to the Swiss family name handbook, the name Gutknecht is native to villages in the cantons of Zurich and Fribourg.

P.S. This was in Swissinfo.org

I think Phos has a valid point ... the Swiss quite oftem seem to claim somebody famous as "one of their own" ... even though the connections are far-fetched. Recent examples would include Ben Roethlisberger and Chesley Sullenberger.

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

Just for a change, you've all been trolled. The closest I've heard of the Swiss inventing something was the question "Wasn't Linux invented by a Swiss?" (the correct answer is a Finn). Basically it stems back to the creation of the Pascal language by a professor at UNIZH or ETHZ (can't remember which) back in the late 70s, and everyone liking to confuse it with their favorite tech du jour.

As for Sir Tim Berners-Lee, he invented the http protocol and the first web server (which is much more interactive than you might think) using a NeXT Cube, a UNIX workstation that was very easy to develop innovative programs on. Macintoshes have nothing to do with this, although fanbois like to mix their histories up, as NeXT was Jobs's follow on company after been booted out of Apple. Sir Tim took a number of existing ideas and merged them into a workable protocol that linked remote computers, and that could convey different media. That was the great step forward, and it did happen at CERN. Just don't get dragged into pub claims...

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

The technology behind the Internet really boils down to two main software components:
  1. The part you don't see, which is the protocol that successfully delivers all that lovely content from a remote web server to your screen, TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol).
  2. The part you see, which is brought to you by HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) which delivers HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) to your computer or phone so they can draw the text and graphics that we call a webpage.
Number 1 was developed first by the US Dept. of Defense in the 70's in order to create a communications network that could survive a nuclear attack by automatically routing data packets around nodes that were destroyed. It was then handed off to several US universities where the commercial version was perfected and subsequently deployed by operators throughout the US and then the world.

HTTP/HTML was later developed at CERN and then spread throughout the world as it was so intuitive and simple to use, while easily hitching a ride on top of TCP/IP.

So, you could really say it was a joint US/Swiss thing. Both components are necessary to make it work.

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

So many people confuse the Internet with the Worldwide Web (WWW)!

The Internet (=the network protocol) was invented in the US (other countries invented similar protocols but abandoned them later to join the One Internet).
The Web was invented in CERN by a British guy. I don't know if he was standing in France or Switzerland when the idea hit him.

What you are describing is the technology behind "the WWW", not the internet. HTTP and HTML are not required for "the internet" to work.

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

Things that are puzzling me:

1. Why do so many American wrongly believe that the CERN and Switzerland is the very same thing? (But I do know why so many think that WWW and Internet is the same.)

2. Why are we talking about things people wrote in yester-yesteryear, 2009 exactly? (When we could instead talk about what someone said in the year 1974? Thank jef)

3.Have you heard how Mr Clark says, I paraphrase, "Not a computer like this, but a small box"? When in realty a single modern high end computer (with one Nvidia K20 card) has the same computing power as worlds most powerful computer in 1997! (Or the same computing power as the 500 most powerful computers in 1993 combined!)

Source. Top500 and Anandtech.
