The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

How is it a lot of people in Switzerland believe the Internet was invented here?

I know Tim Berners-Lee was able to develop a hypertext protocol, but that is NOT the Internet. Even more so, he wasn't even the first to design a hypertext system. Bill Atkinson's Hypercard was using hypertext way before Tim. Anyone who had a Mac+ surely remembers Hypercard. To me, it only indicates Tim was a Mac user.

The Internet was commissioned by Advanced Research Projects Agency for the US Department of Defense for a distributed computer network able to withstand nuclear attacks. Where was Switzerland in that?

Please try to prove to me the swiss claim is more than just a möchtegern posture.

You'll have to argue that one with the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

I know the guy was even knighted for the HTTP accomplishment. Good for him, and thanks for it. But Hypermedia systems existed long before it. See Hypercard.

I just think the accomplishment is way over-valued compared to the TRUE inventions and innovations that came out of (ahem) California.

Rarely have I heard anyone claim that the Internet was invented in Switzerland. The claim that CERN has is that it was the birthplace of the web.

Perhaps people don't differentiate between the Internet and the web.

Mind you, this was not some great invention or a funded research project. It was basically developed by an inspired Apple Macintosh user to alleviate the task of archiving his documents.

Interesting to see this line from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperCard:

Quote:
HyperCard had a significant impact on the web as it inspired the creation of both HTTP itself (through its influence on Tim Berners-Lee's colleague Robert Cailliau)

Think Different! 

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

Many countries have claimed inventions or inventors on the flimsiest of connections. e.g. He was a citizen of our country; He was born here; he worked here; He was here at the time of the invention; Our coutry funded the work etc.

I guess that an invention can only be truly claimed by a country if the inventor was born, lived and worked in the country with no financial or physical support from other countries

I would say you've answered your own question. As many people don't differentiate between the Web and the 'Net, they don't differentiate between where each was created.

To be fair to the masses, while those of us "in the know" know better, there's little practical difference between the web and the net for most people. Email is done through web interfaces, protocols like gopher and ftp are rarely used by most people, etc. Just like most (Americans, at least) couldn't care less about the difference between GSM and CDMA, as long as they can make a cell phone call, people don't care about the "technical differences" between the 'Net and the Web.

Of course, the very few times this has come up in a social situation that I've been involved with (and I mean very few), people knew the difference. So I can't really feel your pain about Swiss thinking the 'Net was born here. :-)

On a side note, does it really make a difference if a great invention had predecessors or if it was a funded research project? My opinion is no: the fact that he created something and enough people found it useful to spur the phenomenon of the WWW makes it worthy of note regardless.

Everyone knows that the Internet, like most other things, was invented in Australia.

Re: The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke

Its a perpetuated myth of the country's contribution and relevance to civilization, where it actually lacks one. Instead of making a real contribution in real value, make one up, or exaggerate one. It's not much different from the Willhelm Tell story. While many are quite self-satisfied to perpetuate the myth, it's not very tasteful to honor or respect. Möchtegern.

Is that the punchline of the 'The Switzerland inventing the Internet joke'? You seem to be setting up your own 'aunt sally' here...

But luckily some dude at the CERN has thought of the Internet.
But it clearly isn't a valid claim.

I noticed the statement by Mary37 on this thread. One, technically speaking, factually wrong statement does not a meme make.

I wasn't sure if I was missing something, or if you were just annoyed by something. I'm tending toward the latter.

"Möchtegern posture" - is this the tragic medical condition where you can't stand up straight, but
suffer delusions that you can???

PS : I like Phos. I think he realises a lot of things (sometimes)
