Xenophobia or Racism

I've been reading about racism posts in EF for quite a long time.

After much thought I came to believe that some Swiss people are xenophobic, but they are not racists.

The difference between these two from my view is that xenophobic people respond negatively to foreigners so as to protect themselves and their system. In a way this is bad behavior in adaptive form.

Racists on the other hand have aggression and wish to inflict damage (physical or not) on immigrants. Other than skinheads and the sort, most are not brave enough to admit their true-self and thus wear the mask of a xenophobic, they complain about the bad habits of foreigners. Yet, if there were no foreigners those racists would find other population segments and attack them since they are maladaptive in their psychology.

Of course I am not saying xenophobia is good.

Just expressing my thoughts...In a previous post Zombie almost equalled racism to xenophobia

' "(or those who like language tinkering would say xenophobic, the consequences are the same...)" the two were very identical. '

hi arkin, if you read carefully the quote, what i said is that the consequences are the same, not the types of discrimination! to me both are equally wrong (assuming forehand on grounds of skin color or passport that a person is like this or like that) there is a huge difference. so please if you choose to quote me i kindly ask you to be sure that the interpretation you do is accurate. thanks.

Re: Xenophobia or Racism

hmm, I have the feeling that zombie is offended. I did not criticise or judge you (though I could) but simply positively stated my point of view.

"after months of debating the issue to define if the swiss are racist or not, a local study (university of freiburg) demonstrates that swiss employers are actually racist (or those who like language tinkering would say xenophobic, the consequences are the same...) when it comes to select candidates for apprenticeships; balkan and turk dudes lead the rejected etnicithies."

From your qoute zombie, I understand that you equal those two especially because you say "or language tinkering would say"

If you mean some other way, OK it is fine for me. No problemo.

Furthermore I do not think the consequences are the same. I think xenophobic people may change their viewpoint and accept the immigrant though in the case of a racist it would be much harder.

I hope all is fine now.

Is it ?

hi again arkin, discrimination is discrimination. if i assume that a white car will roll better than a yellow one because i've drove a white car before and felt good, i'd have the wrong approach. and the same applies if i assume upon origin, a german car is not neccesarily better than a korean one. discussing the differences between xenophobia and racism is pointless, it's the same kind of dumbness.

Re: Xenophobia or Racism

is this 2 kinds of people with 2 different kinds of mentality, which one is better or which is the worst one when we speak of such kinds of people. In this world we lives in, that is a part of life, it is also not to be accepted one way or another.
