I for one agree entirely with your comments. I didn't actually start this latest chain in the thread "why I HATE Switzerland", I created a new thread which was intended to be a little light hearted look at teh quaint/amusing aspects of life in Switzerland but the postings were all moved to the "Hate" thread by the mods. If you check my Profile you'll note that teh main reason I haven't been anywhere near any "english" forums in any of the countries I've lived in since leaving the UK is that like you, I have no time for the moaning and whining about how this particular place is not as good or whatever when compared to home. As always in a forum, threads develop a life of their own. I didn't intend to start a list of things I hate, merely the amusing quirky aspects of this place - such as the waiting for the green man as noted by one poster.
I agree that if people don't like it here they usually have a choice to make, it might not be practical to just leave but moaning about it won't change things. To be honest, I regret having apparently awoken a sleeping dog with my thread of yesterday. I probably choise an inappropriate title but it was never meant to be a list of stuff I "hate".
Cheers
Thank you for the clarification! I agree, hate is a very strong word to use and unfortunately there are a lot of people who see that, jump on the bandwagon and start listing all the things they find annoying and irritating and above all, what they don't actually understand. I have spent my whole life in the expat world in some form or another - I have always tried to take the best out of every place I have lived in because at the end of the day, every country has something that is not to ones taste. It's just sad that some of the things people complain about are without rhyme or reason and would probably complain as vigorously if they were at home. On a whole, I have adjusted well to life in Switzerland - with a little effort, it is possible.

Communal rather than cantonal, I think you'll find.
Here we take paper and cardboard to the dump along with everything else. The only thing the commune collects is household rubbish (no expensive bags or stickers required!).
Best recycling system I've seen is in Paris (yes, it's true!!!). Every building has 3 types of bins - one for glass, one for non-recyclable domestic waste and then all other basic recycling (tins, plastic bottles and bags, cardboard, paper and small electricals) goes in the third. The bins have different coloured lids to distinguish them and are collected on a daily or twice weekly basis and nobody has to put stickers on anything or tie anything up.

Great for the householder - no sorting and storing, don't have to drive or carry stuff to the recycling points, no stinky bags hanging around in communal areas.

Apparently recycling rates in Paris have increased greatly since this system was introduced.

In regards to "hating" Switzerland - does anyone else find that it really gets them down when other expats rant about the Swiss?

[SNIP]

For me the thing I hate most about Switzerland is listening to expats (who happily benefit from the positives of living here) being unnecessarily negative about Switzerland.
Just my 2c
Well, consider the other side of the coin, having been here for nearly 20 years and also probably not going to leave anytime soon, one of the things that really ****es me off (and which is extremely prevalent here, which is why I rarely read anything) are the long-term ex-pats (naturalised or otherwise) who seem to feel the need to defend the swiss to their last dying breath, and explain in a logical way why everything that the swiss do makes sense etc.

I like living here, otherwise I wouldn't still be here, but it takes a lot to maintain one's sanity (or what little is left).

Personally, and stealing something that originated from Ernest Hemingway who when asked if there were one quality needed, above all others, to be a good writer, replied, “Yes, a built-in, shock-proof, crap detector.”, I would say that such a thing is also what is needed when living in switzerland...

For the non-believers (on the theory that the old one's are the best ones..):

To right..it's the people complaining about the people complaining about the people complaining about being in Switzerland that really get on my nerves.

Cheers,
Nick

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

Hi tgif,

Well, Why are you so upset about things. There are a lot of good things which are there in Switzerland barring that let people use any kind of language till the time they are happy. How can you or fot taht matter anybody has the right to judge or comment on the language which people use.

This kind of argument doesnt help, it just creates tension and ill will. If you have some specifc greviances kindly bring it out, i am sure people from EF or at other forums will reply soon.

Regards,
Dennis

There's definitely an element here of people who are more Swiss than the Swiss, which is mildly amusing.

I agree - that is just as annoying though in my experience a lot rarer (but maybe its the expats Im exposed to). Indeed Ive only "met" that type (more swiss than the swiss themselves) online.

This is also something you'd need to live in Dublin (where Im from). Which is my point - the thing I dislike most about living here is hearing expats complain(*) about things in CH, while enjoying the positives CH has to offer, when all countries have negatives and positives. I was expat in Italy, Sweden and the US and I didnt come across this phenomenon as much as I do here.

(*) unnecessary complaints/ranting - Im not talking about fair observations or questions that crop up in forums.

hahaha! who ever says the CH- collecting paper system is better is nuts, especially when she/he never has lived in germany and was used to this more convenient thing of collecting paper n cardboard. dunno about recycling, effectivity compared to germany...
The german system maybe convenient but it is highly inefficient. You have a have a bin for normal garbage and a bin for everything with these green arrows on it. If you think these green arrows are all about recycling you're wrong. It only means waste disposal is paid for and is organized by a private company. The idea was to reduce garbage through financial incentives. Unfortunately it didn't work. The only result was they collect the same garbage twice as the contents of the normal bin and the green point bin are basically the same. This system wastes billions of Euros and lets consumers falsely believe they're doing any favours to the environment.

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

Have you tried to visit your US embassy`s homepage here in Switzerland? I did that after being sick and tired being alone with too much sparetime and nothing to do except from my studies, and found norwegian groups/clubs who do get togheter from time to time. Then you could find support, get answer to your questions, find people in the same situation and speak your own language

I find this funny too. Someone recently told me that you can get fined if you break the rule. Apparently you should adhere to the proper crossings if you're within 50 metres of one.
I was surprised to hear people in the US actually get fined for "jaywalking" and that there's a word for this offense. Your chances of that in Switzerland are close to zero unless you cross an Autobahn. So much for the "strict rules" in Switzerland.

Jaywalking is an infraction in the States except in Los Angeles, where Jay Leno has special permission to tape his eponymous segment.

I don't hate Switzerland but something that bugs me would be.....no covers on food on the buffet. I have a hard time eating the food when there are 3 or 4 flies on it, I keep thinking about where those flies may have been before

Ok...so now I'm going to the what I love about Switzerland thread? - the water - best for washing your hair and generally always ice cold right out of the tap.

Integration and being happy in a strange country is difficult when we have insummountable obstacles like this to deal with. Something must be done.

True, it is very rarely enforced from my experience there also except when a certain NY mayor decides he wants to get the city in order and this is the next step to cleaining it up and then the police give up after a few days.

These are of course Swiss flies. So naturally the will only expel the most delicate of vomit over your food having first revelled in the finest sh*t on the planet...

This is a long-term ex-pat (naturalised or otherwise) defending the swiss to my last dying breath, and explaining in a logical way why everything that the Swiss do makes sense etc.

Re: Why I LOVE Switzerland.

Have you every tried in the company of a few locals to make a throw-away comment about anything, only to have someone explain to you, in detail and at length, the reasons for it ?

Give it a go. A real example: "those wood blocks are stacked neatly. It all a bit anal...".

Most people I know would respond by saying:"Yeah if you lived in the mountains, it will give you something to do in the winter when you are bored rigid."

The swiss answer :
"They are stacked this way to ensure minimise exposure of the wood surface to air (surface area to volume scale factor) and ingress of moisture to keep it completely dry. Also it prevents animals living in it which causes problems for the house..."

Everything has an explanation which is usually rational, but nonetheless by most people from outside CH would be considered pedantic, anal, fussy or just plain unnecessary.

You can get fined for jaywalking within close distance (50 or 100 meteres) of a crossing. The police sit by the local school when they are bored and issue warnings (and fines to some who get annoyed at them) to the young folk who cross 4 metres from the crossing to make their walk to town for lunch that little bit shorter.

Going the long way to cross at the proper place provides much needed exercise and whets the appetite. Lunch is all the more pleasant afterwards.
