Have you every tried in the company of a few locals to make a throw-away comment about anything, only to have someone explain to you, in detail and at length, the reasons for it ?
I once commented to a couple of Swiss while on a train waiting in a station how pristine the station was and that even the stones between the rails had no weeds growing in them.

It was then explained to me at great length how weeds could not be allowed to grow there. as they in turn attract wind-borne earth to the stones which would eventually have a destabilising effect on the rails themselves...

Everything has an explanation which is usually rational, but nonetheless by most people from outside CH would be considered pedantic, anal, fussy or just plain unnecessary.

dave
It's true - in many other places such an explanation would put you squarely among those with a deficit of social skills or be somewhere along the Asperger's spectrum.

I think it's really interesting....but my question is which comes first, the act or the explanation?

Integration and being happy in a strange country is difficult when we have insummountable obstacles like this to deal with. Something must be done.

dave
Integration? being happy? strange country? insurmountable obstacles?

You got all that because I don't like flies on my food?

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

Not quite. I merely surprised that you consider such a thing worthy of mention in preference to anything profound.

Well the thread seemed to have taken a turn from the OP's start. I didn't realize that dust, laundry rotation and jaywalking are profound. My post also could have been looked upon that I don't find too much to complain about in Switzerland.

Re: Why I LOVE Switzerland.

It's interesting to hear the explanations which might not be so immediately obvious to us foreigners.

That people take pride in their physical labour too is something to admire and emulate.

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

I think you win the prize for the most inconsequential dislike. It's like saying that writing in green pen rather than blue would improve chances of world peace.

You are assuming that we have read your other gushing postings about the Shangri-la that is Switzerland. As luck would have it I was even more bored than Sutter and have done so to confirm your views are pretty clear.

Dave,

Your tone sounds upset. I don't know why. There really isn't any reason to call my posts "gushing". I think you don't know me. I think you don't know my views.

I'm sorry if I have offended you. I will bow out of this thread now.

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

I'm rarely offended. At the risk of sounding like Jean-Paul Satre: as far as the forum goes, you are your postings. It is a common misunderstanding for those new to life online. The responses you get will be based purely on what you have written.

Many of us have now met which does add a different dimension to the relationship, but the worst mistake you can make is to take things you read on the forum to heart...

the opposite is then true, you needn't consider that others reading your posts may take them to heart.

Please wake up and smell the coffee. We're not in kindergarten now. If you can't handle some discussion that extends beyond pleasantries and then you should learn.

People should know that when Barry White said "I've got so much to give" he meant cynicism.

Really, is that what he meant?....funny, I always thought he meant something else.
What did he mean when he said 'practice what you preach' then...?

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

Dave a,

here's another Walter Bagehot quote that might come in handy:
"The being without an opinion is so painful to the human nature that most people will leap to a hasty opinion rather than undergo it"

I prefer Confucius "Man with hole in pocket feel cocky all day"

Cheers

Re: Why I HATE Switzerland.

At this point we need those Kling&Freitag deep-deep-deep-gut-wrenching- subwoofers I mentioned earlier. I'm providing the soundsystem for the next barbeque...

Happened a lot in the first few years. On a similar note I had to hand joke help files for every joke I cracked My gutter humor was wasted here. Now I don't crack any jokes and just sit in the corner with my bottle of Tabasco sauce.
