The existence of a cooling fan is typical of first generation cutting-edge electronics. I have seen many devices whereby the cooling fan disappears in the 2nd generation device. That's cutting, bleeding edge for you
My 2nd generation Sony BRay player still sports a noisy fan . And if I am not totally mistaken the brandnew 3rd generation ones do too ...

Three built-in tuners (2 parallel recordings, plus watching a 3rd channel) (++).
I haven't tried yet, but the manual states that it is possible to record only one channel, though it refers to programmed recording. I mean, according to the manual it's not possible to program two recordings at the same time. I guess that the three tuners are managed like this: one for programmed recording, one for recording "on the fly" and the third one to watch something else while the other two are recording. But the software apparently is not so flexible to allow two programmed recording at the same time. I will have a try tomorrow and see what happens.

I have found a bug: sometimes when I change from an SD channel to an HD one the box gets stuck, it plays the audio of the HD channel but the screen stays black, and after a little while the box shuts down and reboots. It happens often enough to be mildly annoying.

I tried the recording functions, it works smoothly in SD and HD. No quality loss, not even in HD.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I had one unexplained reboot sofar but I cant attach it to any particular thing I did at that moment.

I am pretty sure you can record two programmes at the same time and yet watch a third. I have programmed two overlapping recordings, no problems sofar.

I have read somewhere that the box may revolt when you have the HDMI setting on auto for the resolution. I have set it to force display in 1080i and have sofar not seen any troubles.

Some HD programmes (like HD suisse) are in 720p others like BBC are (or are planning) broadcasting in 1080i.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

Indeed I've set the box to Auto. The manual somewhere mentions that if the box is set in auto it may take longer to switch between the HD channels. I'll try to set it at 1080 and see if it crashes again.

Does it not output 1080p ? Seems a bit ridiculous in this day and age.

That's not a problem of the box, official HDTV-Standard Resolutions go up to 1080i only (in contrast to HD-Media like BluRay or HD-Games that go up to 1080p).

I thought there is no such thing as 1080p on telly. The only way you can get 1080p at the moment is via Bluray or HD-DVD.

And videogames (PlayStation 3, Xbox360) though not all the games reach 1080p resolution, some games do.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

Be careful with the (forced) settings of 1080i output. I had some time to experiment y'day. I noticed the following:

I had a piece of recorded Net Geo material at 720p. When played back it would show some clearly visible jitter. When I set the setting back from "1080i" to "auto" the jitter had gone.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I set 1080i fixed, and the box didn't crash while changing channels. I guess it's really the "auto" option that confuses the box, anyway even with fixed mode it doesn't change the HD channels faster. There's is a quite long lag time while changing between HD channels.

I tried to program two recording at the same time and it works.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

A word of warning. I got my box last week, all installed fine, but have had a bunch of issues with it. Often my TV (brand new philips 42&quot can't recognize the device, and I get a 'no video signal', generally happens when i switch to another device (xbox) then try to switch back. Often when it is working I can see the OSD and hear sound but no picture. A random combination of TV off, tv on, unplug box, replug box, change hdmi ports seems to revive it... but with no apparent absolute fix in my non-scientific approach I see there are some 'black screen' known issues especially in relation to Philips TVs in the forum mentioned here: http://www.digi-tv.ch/cablecom/3938-...thread-16.html So i'll wait and see if I get an update that resolves it in the next week or so. I may just end up sending it back.

Darren - I've got the same "black hole" issue here. Looks like we're the Beta Testing team. I'd love to spend a few days at Cablecom - just see what on earth they do in there !

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I have received the box last friday and I have yet to experience any show stopping bugs - so far only minor issues or improvements over the old ADB box. I also seem to be one of the few who has only received one box .

I have the same issue with my old DVD recorder. My TV will sometimes simply not recognize the HDMI connection, but the SCART connection via a different input is ok. So I thought it is a problem with HDMI.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

i have been waiting for the hd recorder for countless months, and now it is here i am hesitating in pulling the trigger on it, because i am happy with the SD recorder that i have.

I would like it a lot to have some hd channels.... but am worried that the fan noise of the recorder and the 16:9 issue will be too much for me to bear!

what should i do!!!

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

The fan noise is no problem unless you keep the box beside your bed. The image aspect ratio is annoying indeed.

The HD channels are still few and most of them (imho) have nothing interesting to see, but NatGeo and HD Suisse are quite good.

If I already had an SD recorder I would not have changed.

I don't really have a 16:9 issue anymore. All the channels I watch - BBC, ITV,C4, the swiss channels, the main german ones are all broadcasting in 16:9. Only if the programme itself is a bit older, maybe more than 2-3 years old then they would be in 4:3. Otherwise, almost everything is in 16:9.

For me is the Fr.5 difference worth it? Yes!

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

my 'black hole' issue has gone away. I change the picture resolution from 'auto' to permanent 1080 and it seems to have done the trick.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

My issues have resolved themselves as well. Now all working perfectly.

I should have recorded my firmware revision before to confirm, but I'm guessing we got a silent update that fixed our issues. If that was the case, it was actually a pretty fast resolution all things considered.

Its a nice little box, now if I only I can figure out how to hack the firmware to make those 2 ethernet ports and usb plug useful
