Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

HD recorder arrived this morning. Ordered it on Friday last, so not bad with a waiting time 3 working days. Especially as they wrote to me immediately saying there was a lead time of up to 4 weeks at the moment.

thanks for the tips throughout the thread. I'll add any teething problems I have when I get to experiment with it later.

My issues have resolved themselves as well. Now all working perfectly.

I should have recorded my firmware revision before to confirm, but I'm guessing we got a silent update that fixed our issues. If that was the case, it was actually a pretty fast resolution all things considered.

Its a nice little box, now if I only I can figure out how to hack the firmware to make those 2 ethernet ports and usb plug useful
What did they solve exactly? I still have the 16:9 issue, anyway since I set the HDMI to 1080p I haven't had crashes while changing channels.

The trouble with digital connections is that you don't know which device is at fault:

Is the HD receiver at fault and sending out the wrong flags in it's HDMI data stream?

Is the HD TV at fault, receiving the correct flags, but not interpreting them properly?

Is the broadcaster at fault for setting the 16:9 flags incorrectly, or too late?

I have lived through major headaches of exactly these issues and with various equipment manufacturers all pointing fingers at each other, all saying they were perfect therefore someone else was to blame. It's not easy!

A protocol analyser help to narrow down such issues, but we don't tend to have one at home....

If you have multiple HDMI devices, and can build experience that shows that one particular device or combination is reliable, then you can narrow down the problem somewhat.

Often such problems are solved with software / firmware updates.

However a TV is difficult to update - to update the firmware in the TV requires special cables and tools - and you have to take action to do it.

Luckily, the advantage of using a cable TV receiver supplied by the cable TV operator is that they can offer you live automatic software updates, that happen without any effort on your part.

So that's my 2 Rappens worth...

I ordered mine 2.5 weeks ago and still no luck. In the mean time I am being charged for my current SD recorder AND HD receiver. Called them last Fri and they said that it was on the way, but if I "receive 2 boxes instead of one, please send one back... "

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

hey guys

my contract with cablecom started on mid june 08.

I have the media box recorder.

What is the process to follow in order to get the HD mediabox recorder?

Should be straight forward if you want to buy something more expensive(upgrade) but just in case i am asking here first.

thanks
Nik

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

go to the support website, login and order the recorder. Just follow the instruction on the web. When you receive the box, return them the old one. That's it

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

now I am really ****ed off with cablecom (yeah, a bit late, I know...)

Last May, they advised me that if I already have a SD recorder and want to have HD channels and not lose recorder functions, I should just order the HD receiver and keep my SD recorder. When the HD recorder becomes available, I can just do an exchange.

I ordered the HD recorder a month ago. Until today I have not received it, but I received the January bill for the SD recorder and the HD receiver, so I called cablecom.

To my shock, the lady told me that I will be receiving my 2 (TWO!) HD recorders shortly, so from January I will pay for 2 HD recorders. Wtf? She said that I can only exhange 2 boxes for 2 boxes, not for one box!!

Now I am stuck with 2 boxed which I don't need for another 3 months (notice period)!!, when all I need is a HD recorder!

I told her that the only reason I have 2 boxes is because they were the ones who told me to do it this way. She says understands what I am saying, but I still have to meet the contract notice period.

Has anyone else had the same experience? I heard that some people received 2 HD recorder boxes - is this why?

Is anyone having a problem with fan noise? Is the fan staying on all the time?

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

The fan will run most of the time, even in "stand by". Standby with Cablecom means the device uses the same amount of power as when turned on, essentially it's just turning off the lights .

When in "stand by" (and no recording active) the fan may stop for a few minutes only to wind back up again a little later.

That's terrible, I wonder if it'll be fixed by a firmware upgrade.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

The noise is considerable when in a quiet environment, so you probably wouldnt want to have in your bedroom. In a general atmosphere ore when watching TV it's not a problem.

I am generally happy with the box, even if a few quirks remain.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

"Much noisier" is difficult to say. It's definitely noisier (in Standby too), so I wouldnt want it in my bedroom. My BluRay Player (when in operation) is about the same noise, the old SD Box was quieter.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

Mine arrived today, after ordering around the middle of last week, so to Cablecom on that front.

However, it seems to have stuck at the "The set-up is now being finalised [...]" screen. I noticed originally that I was actually able to view (and hear) TV in the EPG screen while it was supposedly finalising the setup, but since turning it off and back on again this has disappeared.

Unfortunately it's too late for tonight, so I'll have to call Cablecom to flip their magic switch from "broken" to "working" tomorrow.

Also, where might I find out what the default PIN is ? None of the accompanying documentation was in English and I can't see anything that obviously leaps out as a PIN. This is to get into, for example, the "Factory Settings" or "PIN Settings" screens from the Main Menu -> Settings screen.

Once I've got it up and running, I'll plug some network cables into those ethernet ports and see if anything interesting can be seen.

The default PIN is written somewhere in the instruction manual. You don't really need to use it unless you want to apply some form of "parental control"

"setup is being finalized", Meaning: your smart card is not yet active. YOu may have to call CC.

Since there isn't an English option on the hotline, I sent an email in. Got a reply back (15 minutes later ) saying they would "reinitialise the SIM card within two hours".

This happened when I got my SD recorder as well, and I did the exact same thing (email). That fixed the problem then, I'm reasonably confident it will fix it now and I'll be able to watch my Channel 4 news when I get home.

(My main interest in the HD recorder was being able to connect to my amp using something other than s-video. That, alone, will probably result in a visible improvement, regardless of HD vs SD. )

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

Everything's working, however:
  • I only have a couple of HD channels. I thought they were all enabled for the 3 months trial ?
  • After adding a few things to the Favourites, I can't figure out how to remove them, or add more. Help !?

After waiting for almost 2 months, mine is still not here. Not only that, on Thursday night our Mediabox recorder stopped working and after a few phone calls to the technical line on Thurs night and the whole of Friday, they figured out that they "cancelled" it by mistake because I was supposed to have my HD recorder already. By the time they figured this out, the account admin people have already gone home for the weekend and apparently there is nothing anyone can do about this until Monday. So great, no telly or footy over the weekend
