Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

well, believe it or not, I still have not received my HD recorder that I ordered on November 11th!

In the mean time, I have made a dozen phone calls to them, they cancelled my HD receiver thinking that I already have the HD recorder, and it took them 12 days to switch on my TV service again (no TV for 12 days!!). Then of course, they sent me the bill for everything.

Furthermore, as I was asking for an "exchange" instead of a new HD contract, I don't qualify for the "2 months for free with satisfaction guarantee". Seeing as I have a 3 month notice period on the HD receiver, I told them that I might as well cancel that and order the new HD recorder on a separate contract (i.e., continue to pay Fr.15 for 3 months but at the same time save Fr.25 x 2 for the next 2 months!!)

It has been almost a month since I've done this and still no sight of the HD recorder!!! To make matters worse, I have now been told that with the new contract, and any new contract with cablecom (incl. phone, internet), the contract always automatically renews for 12 months, with a 3-month notice period before your contract anniversary date!! (beware!!)

What really annoys me is that even though the helpline is polite and always seem to want to help, they get stuck all the time because the "system is blocked" or the contract conditions is so & so...

I give up...

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I upgraded from the 2007 Cablecom Recorder to their HD Media Recorder in December 2008. Immediately had problms with it self switching to standby, or skipping to another channel or info page. Also overnight it would lock and not respond to remote. Made no difference whether I switched off or not overnight. To fix the remote I had to go through manual reset as many as 3 times. Replacement box delivered in January, the same. Now on my 4th HD box, but same problems. Cablecom say they have no fix. I can either return to the non HD recorder or continue with 6 months half price (I already had a full refund for 120CHF) Telephone service is better at answering the phone and delivery can be quicker than 3 weeks if you really push them. Are there many out there suffering this string of problems or who can say they found a solution. Technician has checked the installation and apart from replacing their white cable said all was OK.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I have received 4 HD recorders, all of them faulty, twice they cancelled the smart card before the new machine was delivered. On the 2nd occasion, on a Saturday morning, I threated them over the phone with a fate worse than.. and was amazed they switched it back on, which they earlier stated was impossible. 4th unit delivered Saturday whilst old card still switched on. Quicj phone call to Customer care and it was up and running before I had put the phone down. The equipment is still crap, with no end in sight.

I love the channels and the features in general. However, the thing keeps on switching the picture format and is only visible "cropped"- a known bug at Cablecom.

Another one is that it keeps on switching on the subtitles in some channels...

So I agree: the box is not really "mature", but we are all paying beta-tester...

Actually, the funny thing is that a lot of the channels are now broadcasting in 16:9 so this should not be a problem as there is hardly any 4:3 programmes that is subject to its automatic "stretching". However, the box seems too dumb to realize this and stretches the 16:9 programmes anyway, making them doubly stretched!! The swiss channels are not affected, but the german channels are.

a known bug at Cablecom.
What is shocking is that this was a known bug from the HD mediabox released waaay before the HD Mediabox recorder, probably 9 months before if memory serves.

So they had 9 months to fix that bug on the HD Mediabox and make sure the planned new HD mediabox recorder wouldnt suffer from it.... and they did nothing except release a recorder with the same known bug.

Now its still just a known bug. No date is given for a potential fix.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

My old SD DVR gave up the ghost last Tuesday while a Cablecom techie was round to try and diagnose a problem with the reception, it had had some problems, but after it was unplugged, moved and plugged back in again, it refused to work again.

Anyway, I took the opportunity to upgrade to HD, the girl on the phone said it would be around 20 working days for delivery, yet it arrived on Friday (3 working days). After a few problems setting up caused by CC not activating the service yet, I was up and running.

I don't like the TV guide and DVR functionality compared to the old SD recorder. The Guide is slow, the DVR doesn't do series recording, and takes a couple of menu steps to get to your recorded shows. I was also annoyed to find out the OK button doesn't set a recording in the guide, but sets a reminder instead, so I missed a few programmes over the weekend.

I was also annoyed to see I haven't got Nat Geo HD, is this normal? I though all the HD channels were included, seeing as there's only about six, I don't want to shell out more money for one single channel.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

hey cyrus

eventually you ll find out one way or another that the HD has more or less the same funtionallity as the SD one. not very user friendly but all the functionallity is there.

about the NG HD i think somewhere over christmas they figured out a new source of income and have now NG HD and eurosport HD in a HD collection packet.

i waited for about 6 weeks for it to be delivered, and then another two days (over the weekend of course! :p) to be activated.

but the thing is...once you go HD you simply cant go back. to my eyes the
diff is as big as the transition from black&white to color ;)

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I recently received a reply to my many complaints written and signed by the "Rudolf Fischer" I cannot attach, but I quote " Let me assure you that it is not our aim to expect customers to continuously prectice factory resets or software upgrades. According to my information from our release management, some unexpected problems which we actually wanted to avoid by extensive testing before the release date, emerged after the release of the new HD Mediabox Recorder. Apparently, reality teaches us that roll-outs of new devices are more complex than the assumptions of test engineers before the release."
This was said on 26 February, before they delivered the 3rd and 4th replacement HD boxes which still do not function correctly. In the meantime I have been promised a credit note for 120CHF due to faulty service and an offer to only pay 50% of normal for a further 6 months. They also advised that a further 8? new English channels will be included in the pacgake from 17 March 2009, but no information on when they will have a proper fix.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

However, many of the same problems existed on the hd non recording mediabox which was released 9 months before the hd mediabox recorder. This was acknowledged on the cablecom site because they had a popup explaining the presence of two known bugs (eg the 16:9 bug) which they said they were working on. This i am 100% sure of, as i remember clearly reading the popup at the time.

therefore, the problems with the hd mediabox recorder can hardly have been unexpected.

which means, either / and...
a) how stupid can their engineers be
b) why is rudolf fischer flat out lying to you?

take your pick.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

My HD Mediabox seems incredibly buggy. I'm getting frequent crashes and subsequent reboots causing loss of scheduled recordings.

The user interface is horrible and slow compared to the SD mediabox which, although far from perfect, was reasonably stable. Apart from the reboots, I've noticed that navigating the menus often drops you back to live TV mode for no reason.

Anyone else had similar problems? Sending the box back to Cablecom would probably solve nothing since the problems would seem to be software-based rather than hardware-based.

These boxes can usually be given software updates, although I've never seen one.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

Software updates are over the air, if you switch off and on your recorder, it will sometimes say LOAD on the front display. I guess that all updates are delivered in this manner, and i think they can be forced through as well.

My EPG on standard mediabox recorder is also much buggier than i used to be. Until now i have put this down to perhaps the old age of my recorder... however, it could also have been caused by a bad software update.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

My HD Mediabox seems to "crash" about once a week. Usually when I try to rewind some live TV (and therefore, inevitably, just while I was watching something I wanted to ). However, the only casualty I have noticed of these crashes is my favourite channels list, which always reverts to the channels I originally added to it, months ago (losing all the new English channels I've only recently added).

With that said, I make very little use of scheduled recordings. I have a regular one to catch the Channel 4 news, and my wife has a few for some german dubs of Buffy, Dark Angel, et al, and that's about it. I haven't noticed any of them 'disappearing' (although I don't watch them, so it could be missing heaps and I wouldn't know ).

I've found the trick with navigating the guide, etc, without getting kicked back to live TV is to wait ~5 seconds after it has appeared on the screen before hitting the "OK" button on anything.

Given the number of times the HD mediabox has rebooted, I'd say it has had ample opportunity to download a software update

It sounds like you've experienced similar problems to me, although I've had more problems recently since I've set up more scheduled recordings.

I discovered the 5 seconds trick too. Do you get the one where you're in the TV guide, hit 'record' to schedule the recording, then get bounced back to live TV? Someone's obviously got a try...catch block around that bit of code...

This works for me too.

I've had the HD box for about a month and haven't experienced any crashes yet.

Has anyone got series recording to work? It didn't work much on the old SD box either. I had one series work and a popup box appeared to ask if I wanted to record the entire series, but I've never seen it since, not even when I tried again on the same programme.

Re: Cablecom: HD Mediabox recorder availability

I'm not too happy with my box as well.

I recorded Impossible Mission III the other day and it missed the last few minutes of the film, very annoying as dont know what happened, well I can guess but not really the point. That was my first experience of recording something, looks liek the timing are not quite sync'd up.

Also I am quite please that we now have ITV3,4 and BBC3,4, but there are no tv guide details, which means you cant record anything either. Anyone have know how to fix this?
