Grey grey, all is grey AND horrible!!

What's wrong with architechts in Zurich using always this boring, depressive grey cement. If you pass by Hauptgebaude ETH there's an architechture exibition and they seem to emphasize this crappy grey cement.
Dear swiss architects:

- Grey cement is boring. And depressing.
- No, the wood pattern transferred to it is not beatuful. It's barely noticeable in fact, and from distance it seems just dirty.
- You CAN do not-grey not-square university and-or public buildings. Without drifting to the chaos of hippy country. Sweden has some and it is not considered an excessively lively palce.
- If you really want to use cheap Jura cement, at least find a more creative pattern and maybe PAINT it.

STOP THE GREY!

Re: Grey grey, all is grey AND horrible!!

I thought this was going to be yet another weather thread.

But it's not! It's a concrete thread! How exciting!

And yes, OP, I agree with you 100%. Some architects have even managed to design beautiful structures, then diminish them by specifying unfinished concrete for their construction. Some examples from my home city include:

The Sydney Opera House

Anzac Bridge

The Sydney Empty Container Centre, sorry, Sydney Entertainment Centre

If it can happen in a beautiful city like Sydney, I guess it can happen anywhere.

I just content myself with the thought that concrete cancer will probably destroy these structures within 40-50 years anyway ... (although I hope the Opera House gets a decent oncologist as it's nearing that age range already!)

i've heard it's the government's restriction. No freedom to choose colours for the buildings. It's the local government decide which colours can be chosen.

Never ever get stuck next to a Swiss concrete specialist at a Christmas party. Been there, done that, nearly slit my wrists with the butter knife...

Concrete is a substance to be revered here, believe me. Three hours at a firm's Christmas party hammered it home to me.

Just be thankful those buildings are grey and not that puke-yellow-ochre that was favoured in Switzerland in the 70s/80s.

I got a hint of that, at least from the pictures shown in Hauptgabaude ETH.
Like, showing the best particulars of their architectural creativity:
grey square cement pillars crossing. Wow.
A room all made in grey concrete. Breaking the omnipresent concrete, only the light switches.
And those amateurs did not bother to find a way to make concrete switches?
You want concrete? Bring it on.
I want concrete roads.
Concrete trams and planes.
Concrete children slides.
Concrete toilets.

Seriously, wtf.
By the way, my dear and respected Swiss, concrete looks awfully cheap. Like, I want to slack off so I will just leave this unfinished.

Sure. This is the point about black+white photography. Nobody opposed the grey in those times. And when TV was not yet in colours, you were used to various shades of grey !

Santiago Calatrava ! only rivalled by Sir Norman Foster (Dolder Hotel complex in Zurich for example).. The two of them are not working for meagre salaries. They are the PrimaDonnas of architecture. But what they create always is beautiful. The whole Stadelhofen compound combines usefulness with architectural excellence ! But again, those two are a class of their own

Can we digitally re-colour the buildings?

yes, like this

Sonnenuntergang an der Seepromenade (ZH-ZF-79)

imagine that when I went to school most real photos of this city only were around in black and white, with some few exceptions

true enough, the photos shown here are present day photos. "Colorizations" of b/w photos were done since the late 1890ies, but in a way looked like a mix of photo and painting. Even many of the real photos of the late 1950ies and even the 60ies if in colour looked somewhat artificial.

Beautiful indeed, and that's only half of it ... but it's the form that's beautiful, not the finished surface!

As with the structures in Dougal's Breakfast's post, wouldn't it be so much more beautiful if surfaced with some attractive finish, like tiles, paint, or inch-thick platinum?
