EF ain't what it used to be.

Is it just me, or has the quality of the forum gone downhill? I remember when I joined in 2006, I found the forum to be a veritable font of wisdom - a great database of useful information about living in Switzerland.

Nowadays when I (infrequently) log on I just see page after page of mindless banter and stupid opinions, with nary a top tip or hint in sight.
I now hesitate to contribute anything useful, assuming that it will be just lost in the noise.

Anyway - just my 2cents. And, true to form, not a shred of useful information in it.

Humbug!

Re: EF ain't what it used to be.

I agree it's not what it used to be. However, the scale of the place has bloomed in the last eighteen months, and there's a lot more going on. There's also a lot more 'chat' and nonsense, too IMO, but a lot of people seem to find that interesting and much as I'd prefer a Fatherly Dictatorship (just ask the North Koreans how cool it is) the Members get what the Members want.

I do wish people would use the search function more often, though.

Merry Christmas, Grahame

So post something useful, and stop complaining.

Otherwise you get the forum you deserve.

Re: EF ain't what it used to be.

Given your number of posts in the last 3 years, maybe you could contribute more of your sage words of wisdom rather than hiding out in your cave, only to emerge all cranky, in need of a bath, and complaining about the quality of the soap.

So you are looking for good info and tips? Looks like you lived here longer than most others. How much help or tips did you provide on the EF over the last two years?

The forum turns into what we make it. You could make it a bit more the way you like it yourself.

Re: EF ain't what it used to be.

Just for a sense of perspective, I became aware of the EF in January 2007. It was a vicious, nasty, cruel place, full of in-jokes and banter that nobody outside the loop could understand.

It was so scary, in fact, that I didn't join for another 11 months, after which I simply accepted it for what it was and got on with it.

It might be different to the wonderfully exclusive days of 2006, but it's certainly not much different to how it was in 2007 - it's just bigger, with different names on the front page and a different set of in-jokes and exclusive banter.

So it goes.

Re: EF ain't what it used to be.

When I joined the forum, or even before I actually joined, I got all the crucial info I needed using the search funtion. In fact, I think there is really very little new that can be asked nowadays.

Now I primarily use EF as a tool for diversion (like listening to music while working), and some other activities, so I don't really worry about the "quality" slipping.

Pff. Amateurs. I wasn't even allowed to join for 5 years, then I was sent a letter inviting me to join and a giro to pay for my previous 5 years of membership.

Well, you're the one that started this useful thread. I'd call that upping your irony points.

Hi Grahame.

Sorry to hear you're not getting much out of the forum these days. I agree with those saying your contributions in the last 3+ years don't appear to be a great example of what EF is all about.

Personally, I try to contribute useful info when I can. And have actually made a few very nice real life friends on here.

There is a lot of silly banter too. Some of which I find fun and often very funny, other stuff for me is just boring. I find it particularly useful to just ignore the threads that annoy me. But I don't think EF has reached the tipping point yet.

Cheer up. It's Christmas and we live in Switzerland. How lovely.

IMHO it was also a time when a lot of the nonsense we see today was stamped on, either by Mods or Members themselves. We had a pumping social scene in 2007, the noise to signal was significantly higher and Facebook was only slowly having it's effect. I link the then sudden popularity of FB with the casualisation of EF. Previously, the bar was pretty high on here. Then came scribbling on 'walls' and 'Susie throws a snowball at Tommy lol ' and thus the deluge.

Nothing based on evidence, rather observation. There's still pretty much all you need to find on living in Switzerland on these pages. It's what makes this site the premium English language oriented site in the country: it's useful!

Bah humbug, when I were a lad...

Re: EF ain't what it used to be.

My productivity at work has vastly increased recently. My 2010 bonus reflects this - in my dreams !!!

Also, there are a few posts which I made in the past few years, that I would be more than happy with if they evaporated into the ether.

To tell you the truth, I have learnt so much from EF and other places about how to live and survive here in CH that I do not currently have any more questions to pose and not much more to contribute. (especially in the DB scheme of things)

Will keep my weather eye open on EF - for genuine new threads which have not been covered already.

I suppose there is a natural threshold / watershed about problems a "foreigner" can encounter here in CH which we have reached and thrashed to death on EF. The rest is more day to day stuff and mimicing news and social events. Got to say, I do miss the "Richard" era.

Right. So Graham makes a reasonable observation and it becomes open season on Graham. This is (for me) symptomatic of exactly the issue Graham refers to.

Let him make his point, you don't have to agree with it, but having a go at him for saying what he thinks is utter bollockology.
